COMMENTS:
The main thing that scares me is that my mom would be the one to clean the stuff out from my apartment and she would end up finding all my porn. Seriously, I have A LOT of porn. :-)
That's an interesting question? I think it's mostly that people want the good times to continue. Nobody want's the party to end (even though they all know it will eventually- even if they refuse to acknowledge the fact). As long as everything's going well they don't want it to end. When things really suck though, and there's no prospect for them getting better in the future, death dosn't seem so bad (and so some people commit suicide or just pine away). Then there's fear of the unknown. Also, fear of death is very much encouraged in society. How many times have you heard anyone give reasons to not fear death (Lucretius and the occasional philosopher notwithstanding)? Society has a vested interest in death. If nobody feared death then they certainly wouldn't fear the law, police, army, prison or any of the things used to control people. It might be a merry but very short life for all of us in that case (not that we'd mind).
Death is the biggest change one goes through in life. It's fear of the unknown, fear of the loss of control over one's destiny, fear of eternity, etc.
Iagree with LudwigVan.

Dirtdog..if you were to die..the last thing your mom would be worried about was your porn stash....take it from another mom, it would be the worst thing that could even happen to her...porn wouldn't make her blink.
Death is natural you live and you die like every other creature on this planet.Enjoy the time while you can and seize the day.
Not every culture "fears" death per-se many non-western/non-anglo cultures welcome, even celebrate death. The are exceptions however The very old and perhaps the very young rarely fear death. It as Ludwig said "The unknown" that is truly feared.

I'm sure many people do not fear the unknown, rather the basic fact that that it, you dead in the ground. People fear the end of their lives as opposed to what actually happens when it ends.
Because everyone has done stuff they regret, like not spending enough time on wife or fishing with your dad and you want another chance to do that before you go.
Because billions of years of evolution made every living thing fear death (or at least avoid it in the less intelligent animals). Any organisms that didn't try to avoid death went extinct, those that did survived.
I died once already. Theoritically, I am a dead man, but I came back. Sorry suckers, you are all going to die. I am an immortal. I am the living proof of the human being's next evolution.
It's mysterious.
It's afraid of ME

It's unknown. Yes we have religion and those with faith can take soem comfort in believing that however in the back of everyone's mind is that little voice asking where are we going. Man's nature is to fear what isn't understood or a mystery.
Because on the surface, death appears to be the cessation of existence -- a terrifying concept, if one actually grasps what it means.
I believe that you get re-incarnated so I don't worry to much about it
Cos you people do not know what is going to happen next. You fear dying because you fear what may come next. Well for bad people...the grave will be very scary and it will be punishment but for the good...the grave will be widened and given a place to sleep till the day of judgement.
Havn't you ever heard the saying...Science can prove everything else...about the moon...the humans the plants the existance of everything but they cannot show us what will happen after we die...what will happen in the grave...two people tried to put microphones in the grave to see if there is something going on...do you know what happned...for attempting such stupid things...they were burnt alive...and you ask where the fire came from.
I fear the process of getting old and senile/weak or sick, so I would probably choose to die by suicide rather than go through those two processes. Suicide is difficult to do because of the survival instinct and because of the risk of failure. However, I believe the possibility of eternal youth and near invincibility are not too far away, so fear of death and illness are becoming irrelevant. You'll only die if you want to or if you're extremely careless.
