I was in 3rd grade math class once in Japan watching what they were doing. What they teach 3rd grader in Japan is what they teach us here in the States in 8th grade.sign,co sign tangent'n shit.I was shocked. But when I talked to them after class,I was a little relieved to find out that they were just like kids here.Boys were like "I wanna go to England and play soccer".Girls said "Oh I love DiCaprio".
But anywayz why are they so smart?

COMMENTS:
Why can't we have that kind of education in the USA?

by LudwigVan on Wed Jun 16, 04 5:30am [+]

Yeah, why?
by johan_moritz on Wed Jun 16, 04 5:33am [+]

Oh, shit, I forgot, I'm not american.
by johan_moritz on Wed Jun 16, 04 5:34am [+]

It's a cultural thing. Great focus on getting a good education by families, combined with excellent standards in schools.
by mojo on Wed Jun 16, 04 8:21am [+]

They get their potential from their genes, and the schools just help develop it. However, the East Asian's are not very creative compared to their counterparts in the West.
by thc2883 on Wed Jun 16, 04 8:33am [+]

Absolutely true. Their culture frowns on drawing attention to yourself, whereas ours celebrates it. Our greatest natural resource is our creativity.
by mojo on Wed Jun 16, 04 8:39am [+]

Cultural attitudes about honor, obedience and respect vs. American attitude of youth is king, the structure of their education system, and an emphasis on math and science. You said they were talking 'tangents n shit,' but I bet they weren't attacking Shakespeare from a variety of intellectual levels (yeah like our 3rd graders do!).
by supposablethumbs on Wed Jun 16, 04 1:29pm [+]

ahead of us in technology, but behind us socially. They will catch up to us eventually.
by ABC on Wed Jun 16, 04 1:37pm [+]

Yeah ABC, but don't you think there is an inverse relationship between social skills and achievement? If they catch up to our cool quotient, will they drop a few brain cells in the process?
by supposablethumbs on Wed Jun 16, 04 1:42pm [+]

I think there priorities will change when their youth rebel against them as much as they have in the west for the last 4 generations.
by ABC on Wed Jun 16, 04 1:51pm [+]

because they have family values (japs have low rate of divorce) the family has a sense of pride and very strong work ethic, and they are pushed to the brink of suicide to succeed in school and in life.
by NHBman on Wed Jun 16, 04 1:52pm [+]

Japanese are just genetically superior to many races in cognitive functions dealing with math and engineering abilities. However, they are inferior in verbal intelligence which is the superior trait of whites, (i.e. legal interpretation, ethics etc.)..
by xxxxxxxx on Wed Jun 16, 04 2:22pm [+]

They're ahead in robotics and electronics but not much else. They still lead in automotive tech but more patents came from American companies in recent years.
by thc2883 on Wed Jun 16, 04 6:30pm [+]

You know, even here in the States,Japanese Americans are way ahead of othey minority group. But I also know a lot of half Japanese half white kids.and they are just like average Americans socially and acdemiclly.some are doing well others are high school drop out.So I would say it's a cultural thing.Japanese Americans stick to their vlue.but when they produce mixed children,I guess it'd hard to raise as "Japanese".

Sorry, I can't send user comments yet, maybe as a result of past political non correctness... so
"Just seen your message, how are you?
I noticed that you wrote that I'm not being politically correct, well, I try to be, so I'll have actual effect, and won't be dragged to stupid and shallow arguments. So, what have I done wrong - besides the cynical comments, in which I don't really care. "
by Yosi on Thu Jun 17, 04 9:51am [+]

They have had way more classroom time and higher quality education than we have over the years. The result is that Japanese kids keep moving further and further ahead of American kids every year.
by nuckinfutz on Mon Sep 13, 04 12:41am [+]

Because the A-bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki exposed them to radioactivity and turned them into superheroes with powers far beyond those of mortal men, like it says in that comic book about that, uh, superhero, you know the one I'm talking about? Cause I can't remember exactly, but I think it was a DC book from the 70's...anyway, I think Bill Clinton was wrong to fire Jocelyn Elders just 'cause she said we should teach masturbation in public schools. If we DID, it might be the one subject in which American students can outperform the Japanese!
by Neal_Anderthal on Sun Oct 03, 04 4:51am [+]

NHBman is correct. They do well, but not doing well often pushes them to the brink of suicide.

From Western to Asian values: Individualism--group consenus.
investigative media--respectful silence.
debate--respectful silence(well, unless you're from Taiwan).

but generally speaking, they spend an awful lot of time whinning!!
by aya on Wed Nov 10, 04 10:50am [+]

Sorry, I mean to say "an awful lot of time studying," not whinning!!" I'm thinking of Americans!
