WHY DO THE AMERICAN DRUG COMPANIES FORCE HIV SUFFERERS IN AFRICA TO PAY STUPIDLY HIGH PRICES FOR A DRUG THAT PROLONGS LIFE?

In my Geog lesson, we had this massive debate about why pharmaceutical companies actually put prices up and refused to let African countries to make their own retro-viral drugs. Whats more important, knowing you can help save someones life? or being ignorant and being greedy?

Greed 20
Stop having sex with monkeys 6
Pro-longing a life 3
It's capitalist country, don't like it, leave 3

COMMENTS:
Think of this : The average African worker earns perhaps, $1-3 per day. The American drug companies put prices up to over $300 for one set of medication for a day. They refused to let the African drug companies to make their own remedies for 'Copyright' laws or whatever, because it would cause them to lose billions for a company that has extremeley extensive profits already. Wheres the ethics in that?

Well, I agree that this is a really bad state of affairs...however, you must also look at the amount of money that the companies originally place into the research...and a company once a drug is discovered can patent the drug and will be the only company to sell this drug, and this can ask the high prices (as they need to make a profit, and need to get the money back from the research cost anyway). After I believe its 7 years (could be less it could only be 2 years...though I'm sure 7 anyway) other companies can then manufacture this drug at cheaper prices...thats why new drugs are so expensive initially, is it unethical...well without the profits made from these drug sales then there would be no further funds for research into more drugs...obviously a certain amount goes into the high salaries some of these people make...but again, your not realistically going to get a company filled with people who will accept a lower pay...and considering the amount of work they do, it is usually worth their amount (maybe the managers etc..pay is a bit extreme)...but I think with drug companies you can't just look at them one sided, i.e. in the sense that they won't sell drugs at a lower price, you have to also consider, their research costs, and the cost of the next research project and the next...

Truth is with certain drugs that are life saving the government should place subsidies on it. Even if you live in America without a descent health insurance policie you wont be able to keep up with the high cost of some of these drugs. Also, drug companies should price the drugs appropriatly within different countries. Or perhaps, they should loan people money for the drugs and have them make payments on it. your right about the fact tat their main goal is to make huge profit. There are numerous examples of how they decieve the public. for example, Merck developed the drug finastride years ago for treating enlarge prostates. They also found out it help hairloss so they took the same drug which was initialy 5 mg and made it into 1mg pills and gave it a new name. They marketed it as Propecia. Same damn drug, less mg but price wise it costed more than the previous finastride pills. this is one example of how they just scam people for more profit. In any sense, if you realy need certain drugs you will be happy to know that in certain foreign countries they make the exact generics for the fraction of the cost and you can order them over seas. From india for example. A bit risky, but alot of people have done it and got the right stuff. That's what I would do , if I couldnt afford it and it was a matter of life and death.

No, in america you wont get people who will work for low wages in these kind of jobs, thats obvious. But what im saying, is that they are hindering the development of the African companies to develop and help their own people, by not allowing them to make their own cheaper to make and cheaper to buy versions of the drug. They're afraid that they'll flood the market and loose hefty profits. There has been comments about the fact that there needs to be research into drug development, which is true, but in recent figures, it shows that the amount spent on drug development was dwarfed by hundreds of billions that was spent on anti-terrorist measures. I can see both sides of the argument, and living in the UK,in a capitalist country i can see the money side to things. But, it comes to a point where morals and ethics are over-run by fat cat profiters. Also, 'stop complaining, your fault you got an STD', reminded me that Aids in Africa is being passed onto babies through their mothers. Perhaps you should get a better understanding of their culture, religion, and state and standard of life first. Whole communities have and will be lost if somethings not done.

Im pretty open minded on this whole thing, im just finding out different peoples points of views.

But the hindering of African companies etc...does not just extent to drugs companies, its everything...all labour, all exports from Africa cost less than say from an export in Europe or America...the whole damn system is wrong, because the African peoples economy cannot improve to higher standards if we are only paying a small amount for exports etc...like say for example those people that complain about children and adults working in factories for pennies...you can't just raise the wage of these workers...otherwise it throughs the economy of that area all out of wack...like if factory workers are getting paid higher amounts...then more can be charged for foods...but then what happens to the farmers etc...it just comes down to the fact that Western powers like to be sympathetic and attend conferences about how they can help by donating so many millions...because in comparison the millions they spent is minute to the amount they would have to spend if they paid decent prices for labour, exports...etc...so its another case of the rich wanting to stay that way, and making sure the poor countries can't get richer...its really weird isn't it?

not farmers...lol...they would benefit as they can then charge more...but builders etc...will be stuck (for awhile) on the same lower wage...not to bad in this country...but in Africa and places this could mean starving.

Research does cost a lot of money, but drug companies spend a lot more money on advertising than research. Research is a small part of their budget.
