COMMENTS:
I'm not really sure which came first, so to say one was the birt of the other, especially sine you have two different genres entirely makes it a little hard to see your point. I personally know form having grown up on the New Jersey, and having gone to New York very much when I was younger, that people where rapping in all kinds of place, like in the parks, and around the neighborhoods where my relatives lived as early as 73-74, it just wasn't commercially successful till the late 70's, but there were any underground tapes and albums made. Then there's the fact that initial rap was not as hostile, or negetive, as it is now, and were just lyrics about going to the club, and dancing, and having fun (at least the ones that the radio would play). It wasn't till "The Message" by Furious Five that rap started having a more political based message, that was easier for radio station to play (they finallt got the nerve to play the good stuff in the mid ninties) I'm not really familiar with punk so I might be wrong of which one came out first, but the only way it couldv'e influenced rap was if people who went on to do rap listen to punk. I, being someone who listened to rap since I first heard it, have never listened to punk. It just doesn't doany thing to me, neither does rock. I don't remember anyone I hung out with listening to punk. Back then that's what the guys, and girls with spiked hair listened to, who dresed in ripped clothes, and leather listened to. It was a totally diferent crowd. the people who initially listen to rap, where the same people who went to discos, and listen to dance music, because all early rap had disco music, and r&b as the background. I can't imagine how one would influence the other. Just my Opinion.
Two completely different genres of anger, I'd say. Punk opened the door for loud anti-establishment anger, then rap became a natural extension of that anger, but the anger was/is directed in a different direction. It's an interesting question, though, and the to would seem to be linked. Both are reactionary, but towards different types of perceived social injustice.
* strike 'to' from that last comment.
I meant 'two' lol.
raps not about anti government, the idiots who make it probably dont know what a government is, let alone spell it. All rap is about is shooting people, pimpin' hoes, and smoking crack. Made by idiots and appeals to idiots.
Some rap is directed in rage against police, corruption and government, though.
When the Clash first heard rap in New York they incorportated it into "This is Radio Clash". To me that's a clear example of rap influencing punk.
Aerosmith was the first band to ever start rap. I say rappers got the idea to start rap from Aerosmith because of a few songs they did.
mysticalknight This is Radio Clash came out in 1979.
No, wait a sec it must have come out a bit later than that.
1980 ok I was close
What a bold statement, too bad you didn't have the balls to leave that comment under your registered name.
None of it would exist if it were not for the blues. Don't argue, I am right. But my personal opinion is rap is crap invented by idiots who can't play. They are not musicians.
I used to listen to rap exclusively until I discovered punk. I grew tired of rappers bashing white people, so I switched to punk.
lowerclassbrats Which rappers bashed white people?
Lots of rappers bash white people, dont ask me which ones because I dont listen to the shit.
Shhh, you're gonna get us accused of all sorts of shit!!
Ice Cube, Puiblic Enemy, Da Lench Mob, Schooly D, Brand Nubian blah blah blag. Just a few who have bashed whites. Oh and did you know that Ice Cube hates Jews along with dozens of other rappers? Research it and you will be amazed.
God damn, now you've gone and done it.
Xylophonemeister666x Thanks for that but could you give me some examples.
For eample what have Ice Cube or Puiblic Enemy said? I have no idea who Da Lench Mob, Schooly D, Brand Nubian are or think I ever will.

Thanks for clearing that up. So you aren't listening to any rap or these rappers?
I used to listened to rap like 15 years ago.
I'm rolling my eyes as we speak.
That Ice Cube is just adorable. I'm going to take the family to see some of his movies.
Just because they're related does'nt mean one would'nt be possible without the other. They both carry a message that people want to hear, and are both a similar type of backlash to the norms of society.

"Then there's the fact that initial rap was not as hostile, or negetive, as it is now, and were just lyrics about going to the club, and dancing, and having fun" don't forget the womanizing. that stuff still exists. i call it "playa" rap, as opposed to "gangsta" rap. either way, it's image music, superficial crap. every kind of music has it's superficial crap. it's rare to find anything genuine. i'd say eminem is genuine, though.
most punk is crap too. it's just fast-paced burban white boy crap. "poor me, poor me, i'm a child of rich white people who could afford to buy me a guitar so i could make money singing unoriginal shit every other punk band has already done."
