WASTED VOTE???

RANT...

I grow a bit weary when told that my vote is wasted just because I refuse to choose between the two major parties. The phrase 'vote for the lesser of the evils' makes me want to vomit. I understand what my vote may count toward regarding this election, but is that logic not the kind of thinking that perpetuates the 'evil' two party system?

...GRRR!

Vote for who you want. 9
You idiot, you're wasting your vote! 7
Right on, sister! 7
Eeeekkk! Another vote for Bush! 5
YAY! Another vote for Bush! 2
I like Mike! 2
Emigrate 2
I like two parties. Less thinking. 0
Just vote. 0

I'm not wasting my vote.

I'm casting my ballot for Libertarians Michael Badnarik and Richard Campagna. It may not make a difference now, but if they get a good percentage this year, then people will start taking the other parties more seriously in the future.

Waterson for President!

Ha ... for some of us, in our zeal to avoid Extreme Evil, we forget people's basic right to choose as they see fit. ;-)

Ultimately, you have to vote as you choose.

I've wasted many a vote. I remember a grade school teacher telling me that he wished they had a NO or NEITHER choice for the Candidates.

We've had the same two major parties in the UK for over 100 years but the current third party (Liberal Democrats) has been growing steadily for some time and some pundits say they may overtake the Conservatives in the near future (oh I hope so!)

Smaller parties like the Green Party, Scottish National Party (quite big in Scotland!) and, worryingly, the far-right British National Party, gain a few seats here and there and can make the major parties take notice of why they were elected and what policies are attracting people.

I guess the difference is that we have several hundred constituencies (election areas) whereas you just have the 50 states.

it's not the lesser of 2 evils.

it's the evil of 2 lessers

Stewie, that's what I thought back in the 70's... it hasn't worked yet, so I think we have to try something else...
by HBinVegas on Fri Sep 24, 04 3:46pm [+]

Heh, I know what you picked HB, and I have to say it doesn't bother me 'cuz of the two, that's who I'd vote for anyway, so there! ;p
by magdalenasdollar on Fri Sep 24, 04 4:11pm [+]

Well maggie, thanks to the electoral college, it really don't matter WHO you vote for, since we all know who's going to "win" California.

My friend voted for Ralph Nader in 2000. Every one of my family and friends blamed Gore losing primarily on Ralph Nader, but I always had to disagree. I said: "More people should have voted in the first place, then Gore may have gotten more votes!" I respected his right to vote for another party. Goddamn stupid fucking electoral college. Send it back to Hell!
by Applerod on Fri Sep 24, 04 4:14pm [+]

I knew someone would say that.

Like it or not, there is noone right now who can challenged the two party system. But the vote isn't a waste. Its a vote for the opponent of whichever candidate you would have voted for.
by cdubatrc on Fri Sep 24, 04 5:36pm [+]

If you're in doubt, vote for Nader!
by tadgerman on Fri Sep 24, 04 6:51pm [+]

I too hate this corrupt two party system. But I think a vote for Kerry is actually a vote against Bush, and I would really like to vote against Bush....
by LCD on Fri Sep 24, 04 10:10pm [+]

Well, SOMEONE is going to get in the office anyways. If you don't vote it won't stop us from having an evil president. We will still get someone in there. Mine as well be the lesser of the two evils.
by Dani_dysfunk on Sun Sep 26, 04 5:15am [+]

(vomit!)

...Just kidding, Dani!
by magdalenasdollar on Sun Sep 26, 04 2:34pm [+]

If you don't vote that would be a waste in my opinion. If everyone could detach political affiliaton from the candidates and vote for the best man/woman, we might actually get an amazing elected official.
by lowerclassbrats on Mon Sep 27, 04 9:27am [+]

Well put LCD.
by MLBOUTON on Mon Sep 27, 04 12:50pm [+]

I have to TOTALLY disagree with that kind of thinking. If we continue to vote under those principles, our great great great great great great grandkids will still be deciding between the same two Evils.
by magdalenasdollar on Mon Sep 27, 04 1:24pm [+]

There are always write in's and 3rd party candidates to consider.
by lowerclassbrats on Wed Sep 29, 04 12:00pm [+]

just vote maybe the big two will hear you through a 3rd party. if they don't they just might be dethroned.
by lowerclassbrats on Wed Sep 29, 04 12:01pm [+]

When this country was smaller, a third party may have been an option. I don't see it likely a third party will win, but the option has to be open in case anyone can ever develop a strong enough "grassroots" (aren't you sick of that term?) campaign. It may happen someday, but for Goddsake, Nader and Badnarik are not gonna take it. A vote for either is effectively a vote for the incumbent.

Employees of a private voter registration company allege that hundreds, perhaps thousands of voters who may think they are registered will be rudely surprised on election day. The company claims hundreds of registration forms were thrown in the trash.
Anyone who has recently registered or re-registered to vote outside a mall or grocery store or even government building may be affected.
The I-Team has obtained information about an alleged widespread pattern of potential registration fraud aimed at democrats. Thee focus of the story is a private registration company called Voters Outreach of America, AKA America Votes.
The out-of-state firm has been in Las Vegas for the past few months, registering voters. It employed up to 300 part-time workers and collected hundreds of registrations per day, but former employees of the company say that Voters Outreach of America only wanted Republican registrations.
Two former workers say they personally witnessed company supervisors rip up and trash registration forms signed by Democrats.
The company has been largely, if not entirely funded, by the Republican National Committee. Similar complaints have been received in Reno where the registrar has asked the FBI to investigate.
