cdubatrc is right, second world refers to communist countries.
look up on your international relations section of your local library. when the cold war started the world was politically recoginsed in three categories: America and Europe was in the bloc that was considered to be first world democracies, then there was the communist bloc, ALL other countries were uncategorised thus the "third world" came about, it didnt necessarily mean poor or underdeveloped but most of these contries were so at the time
