WOULD YOU VOTE FOR A CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE WHO WANTS "SOMEBODY (TO STAND) UP AND SAYS WE'RE GOING TO BE OPPOSED TO THIS IDEA OF DIVERSITY"?

Last month, Congressman Steve King (R-IA) rose on the floor of the House to speak in support of an amendment limiting the use of the Mexican Consulate identification card to allow Mexican immigrants (obviously the LEGAL Mexican immigrants) to get driver's licenses or open bank accounts, a card that is recognized by 160 countries and 33 U.S. states and the Treasury Department.

During those remarks King said that patriotic Americans believe in "cultural continuity" and that it's time "somebody stands up and says we're going to be opposed to this idea of diversity."

(The above information was taken from the website of King's opponent, Joyce Schulte, and can be found on her website, schulteforcongress.com )

Steve King is my Congressman, and sadly he's probably going to be elected -- not because Western Iowans are bigoted (most of us are far from bigoted) but because they aren't familiar with this stuff. Steve King almost makes Bush look liberal.

Sadly, I voted for him two years ago, not knowing any better. Now that I know better, I kick myself all the time for it, because he won in a close race against a good guy.

I'm fucking scared...

I'd never vote for him. 84
That's my kind of guy! 9
I can't decide just from this one example 3

COMMENTS:
It's about time somebody said it. He wasn't speaking againt racial diversity but rather cultural diversity. If they want to keep their culture than they can stay in their country.

I can understand what you mean, MrTroche, but at the same time, 1) America is known as a melting pot, and 2) this isn't even about cultural assimilation.

This is about legal Mexican immigrants having rights -- rights that are already provided to them.

That, and America is a diverse nation. If Republicans start restricting diversity, we'll be going back to the time of the slaves.

The melting pot is the ideal but unfortunately many of these new immigrants are trying to have a salad bowl instead. This is a personal issue for me; my parents are both immigrants from Hispanic nations. I get crap in the mail written in Spanish just because of my surname. That sort of marketing indicates that these people are not assimilating. There should still be a stigma associated with the inability to speak and understand English.

I don't know how well the Mexicans monitor who they give those IDs to so I'll wait before I pass judgement on that specific issue. But it seems like they would have to use some form of Mexican ID to get here in the first place.
