Harmful, because only certain groups control what the media will or will not report on.
I think that part of the problem is that communication through the Internet is not restricted in the same way it would be according to traditional social convention in physical situations. This is a blessing and a curse. You can say ANYTHING you want, without fear of negative repercussions.
I'm not wild about social conventions in general, as one is REQUIRED to censor themselves to fit the situation, but I think talking face-to-face is a more sincere and effective way of exchanging thoughts and feelings. And that's another point. Words on a screen lack emotional content to help clarify a person's true meaning, or their current emotional state.
It's easier not to really read and examine what a person has written - than to not listen to someone who is talking.
I think it could only be helpful, but then again, there is so much disinformation out there. Reminds of the Bruce Springteen song 57 Channels and Nothing On.
But there's no turning back, and I think that's a good thing. Plus, it makes it much harder to get away with crap. Imagine Bush during the 50's or early 60's--THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE END OF CIVILIZATION.
Helpful, the internet has broken up the monopoly on communications that were once held by a very few companies. Without it I doubt CBS forgery story would have broken so soon, or at all. It has made news, and different sorts of news, more available to common people than ever before in history. I don't see how this could be a negative thing.
