Essentially, the Patriot Act "attacked our freedom," ignoring the rights granted to us of the following: having a lawyer and a speedy trial, preventing search and seizure without just cause -- all granted in the Bill of Rights.

It's the right-wingers' desire to control. 112
Only Terrorists are Targeted 8
Because they are hypocrites and idiots 8
They knew no better -- they didn't read the Patriot Act. 6

COMMENTS:
It's really quite simple. The terrorists hate us for our freedom. {President Bush said so, therefore it must be so.}
So once our government takes away our freedom - The terrorists won't have anything to hate us for. So we'll be safe! Now, wasn't that easy?

The same reason they put German Americans and Japanese Americans in concentration camps during WW2. In times of war you must sometimes give up a little freedom until the war is won. I do not understand how you can't understand times of war. Bush could of put us under Marshall law he has the right you know. He did not and will not but those protecting must have tools needed to win the war at home. I haven't lost any freedom from the Patriot Act and I am sorry you feel you have.

I would like you to state the persons name who you personally know and how there rights have been violated so I can try and believe this is not political motivated on your part. List names please and if you have none shut up.

I guess its ok if I delve into your private medical and banking records then, oh and I shall be tapping your phone and computer too, and if any 'keywords' flag up, I can have you removed and detain indefinately, without you knowing what you are charged with, all in the name of 'Freedom'?

When we become complicit in the eroding of rights we can no longer object when they come for us!

Who do you know that this has happened to hamster?

Like the government hasn't done these things before. You act like before GW our gov't would have never spied or probed for information illegally. None of the things you listed is new to our gov't because of the Patriot Act.
by 1FootOutTheDoor on Wed Oct 20, 04 10:13am [+]

None of it was admissable in court however.

This act basically gives your goverment carte blanche, but you seem to be ok with that, so I shall assume that if they were to suspect your politics to be in the slightest bit seditious, you will not mind being taken away and interned.

Anyone remember their history?

Clinton did not need the Patriot Act to go in and kill the Branch Dividians did he? If they wanted to jail people for political views don't you think Moore would have been jailed?

You can't name a person that has been unfairly persecuted under the Patriot Act can you?

Name someone you know or someone you have heard about that is an american citizen who has had any rights taken away? You CANNOT.You can't even site anything close to what Reno did in Waco.

Well, you want someone who was effected by the Patriot Act, my brothers friend was arrested at New York airport, his legs were shackled and he was questioned for 8 hours about possible terrorist links, he was then released and deported back to the UK... his crime? His passport stated that he had been in Morocco and Tunisia in thelast 3 months. Oh and his name was Mohammed.

So basically, a UK citizen can be treated like this under the remit of the Patriot Act.

He was not an American. The Patriot Act is said to take rights away from Americans. If we beleive someone from another country is a threat we have the right to react accordingly. Your point is invalid.

What does it matter what country someone is from, or do you condone the treatment dished out to tourists and foreign visitors.

Do not ask for whom the bell tolls, as it tolls for thee.

Think on it.

"I guess its ok if I delve into your private medical and banking records then"

Since you're against delving into people's medical records, steel, you ought to be rooting for Limbaugh in his Florida court case. If the ruling stands that they were justified in taking his records without his consent, then it sets a precedent for the same thing to happen to anyone else.

Why does is matter if the person is a citizen of the US? Listen skippy we are protecting our own country. Do you understand that? OUR COUNTRY. If we have to detain, ask question of, and send them back to where they are from and there is no terror attack that week I think it is justified. We don't have to let anyone in our country and it did not take the patriot act to tell unwanted persons that. Your argument opposing the patriot act has not been proven. You fail the test of trying to scare people into voting for anyone other than Bush because there personal rights have been lost. It is simply not true. No one has lost their rights. And it strengthens national security. What does it say to people who are foreigners or tourist? You will be safe in America because we take action unlike the Europeans.
