America imprisons roughly 5% of its citizens, primarily for the marijuana charges. That’s more than any other nation in the world. How can America claim to be the freest nation in the world if we imprison the largest portion of our population?

America is not the freest nation in the world. 47
It's a lie perpetuated by false patriots. 35
um, it's not a good thing to leave murderers and rapists out on the streets 12

COMMENTS:
Our drug policy is insane. According to the current scheduling, marijuana is as bad (in the eyes of the law) as heroin, methamphetamine, and crack cocaine. Yea right.

*clap *clap *clap - BRAVO, federal government, thank you for devoting so much time, effort, and money to making criminals out of ordinary people who smoke pot. Logically, alcohol is more of a Schedule I drug than marijuana.

I agree.

I take it you're a user, not a dealer.
If you were a SERIOUS dealer you'd love America's drug laws and the tax free money--sure, there are consequences, but they're well worth the risk.
It's just a matter of perspective.

Excellent ballot question and certainly an excellent response Applerod. I think Marijuana should be decriminalized and the prison sentences for the use of this drug (are outrageous) is supported by the Alcohol lobbyist that pads the pockets of the politicians with astronomical amount of monies to keep Marijuana an illegal substance.

Alcohol consumption has caused more tragedies than Marijuana...the idea that a Government would give the reasons that the American Government have for making it illegal is again demonstrating the hypocrisy in its explanation. We all know quite well that the Alcohol businesses are generating enormous amount of revenues from alcohol sales annually and will continue to do so as long as this drug and others are not decriminialized.

More government swill that we have been taught over the years and accept without question, as we foolishly treat our nation as if it were a sports team that we need to "support" instead of hold to high standards.

In the US you are free.

Free to die without decent medical care and free to go hungry and become homeless should you lose your job.

Lets hear it for FREEDOM.

We are free, but we have rules of society.

The US is about number 40 according to the UN in the world so not even close. They are considered to be an "Elected Dictatorship" by the rest of the world. Just one question are you free to travel the 90 miles to Cuba for a vacation? NO you are not.
