LMAO. Well, like they say, it's not the size of the deck that matters. It's how well you use it. I suggest some type of deck enhancement like a BBQ pit or perhaps a hot tub. Some type of weather proof outdoor speaker system would be a nice touch too. Maybe even some deck toys like a chess/checker board built into a table or a dart board on a wall. And women like a nice feel too. Nothing too rough. Make sure that deck is nice and smooth to the touch. There's nothing worse that a man with a bumpy deck. And when you get through using your deck, dont just go inside and fall asleep. Stay out on the deck and let her know how much you really love her. And even though you're married, use protection on your deck. Termites and mildew dont descriminate. And always remember to keep it clean. That green stuff that eventually appears is a big turn off.
Hey Curious, I'm just curious - No wait! That's you! OK - Now I'm confused! Anyway - Your response was hilarious! I especially found these words rather amuzing: "And when you get through using your deck, dont just go inside and fall asleep. Stay out on the deck and let her know how much you really love her." That's really good advice as I have noticed that although she spends a VERY long time on my deck, I really haven't shown proper appreciation. Whereas I appreciate your advice on how to best utilize and improve upon my average size deck, you still haven't answered my main question: "Does the size of a deck REALLY matter? And if so, why?" I simply must ask for extreme honesty here! I fully realize that there is not much I can do (other than perhaps some nice deck toys) about my average deck now that it's built and all, but I just have to know the truth. I'm trusting the ladies out there to give it to me! :)
lol Thanks for the compliments, D2DB. To be honest, I really dont think size matters. I've spent some pretty boring times on large decks and some great times on small ones. Hell, my husband dont even have a deck! All he has is just a teeny weeny flagstone porch. It's bumpy of course and does have a bit of that green stuff. But hey, the green just gives it character. I say if youre wife is not satisfied with your average size deck, some counseling may be in order. I suggest checking the papers for any deck seminars at your local home improvement store. Those can be of great help and are often free of charge. If you're looking for some good one-on-one help though, I hear Bob Villa is very good. He's helped countless numbers of families with their deck problems. :)
The size of the deck has never mattered to me. It's the party in the deck that's most important. How spontanious friendly is your deck? It's not the same old bbq routine is it? Even a very small deck can be the most popular providing it keeps it's entertainment fresh and clean. Slip in a different type of party once in a while to wow the wife and friends. No one wants hot dogss and hamburgers every day. Thow a big Tbone on there once in a while and watch the Mrs eyes light up. Remember..you have the deck! You are in control of the deck! You want you wife to appreciate the deck...? Take her out there and remind her why she was in awe of that deck in the first place!!! You and the deck need to take back what is yours!!
Hey Curious, "If you're looking for some good one-on-one help though, I hear Bob Villa is very good. He's helped countless numbers of families with their deck problems." I think I'm just suffering from some ole fashioned "deck envy" that will soon pass. Just today I heard some neighborhood ladies talking about my neighbor's deck being a bit boring even if it was BIG! Allllright! Perhaps my neighbor just isn't too sure how to fully use that big deck of his and I also think the newness of his large deck is finally starting to wear off. I think the ladies may have just been size "curious" (pun intended) and are now starting to see that average size decks have their advantages!? Like the fact that the people are much closer on average size decks and thus you get a more "warm" and "intimate" feeling from all that experience it! I'm starting to feel MUCH better now. I've been treating my deck very well lately and even went out to enjoy it the other day when it rained. This was a HUGE step for me as I used to be very concerned about "shrinkage" when my deck got too wet! Why I even went out and played on my deck with my wife the other day and you know what? Maybe it was my imagination but, my deck just seemed to somehow have gotten much bigger while we played! I'm glad I'm coming out of this soft spot so-to-speak! I feel like some up and coming youngster again. Thanks for your support and seemingly expert advice on the ins and outs of various types of decks! As long as I have you - I don't think I'll be needing Bob Villa anytime soon...LOL!
You can always enlarge your deck. Once the neighborhood sees you sporting your new wood out in your yard, all the neighbors will be more than willing to come over and roast wieners and toast their buns on your big deck. For now, consider yourself fortunate for having any deck at all because there's a lot of deckless wonders out there who have never been complimented on the size of their deck.
Tadema, "How spontaneous friendly is your deck? It's not the same old bbq routine is it?" No. It is VERY spontaneous friendly! We are sooo spontaneous friendly on my deck that even the neighbors say that after watching us have such a great time, it made them want to come too! I'm not too sure if I want to talk about throwing big T-bones on the grill yet. Well - Not until I'm fully recovered from this humbling case of deck envy! Ya know? Maybe I can handle an average size steak with some decent girth and a couple of nice sized "taters" to round things off?!?
Tadema, You recommended: "Slip in a different type of party once in a while to wow the wife and friends." I'm always trying to slip in new fun things to make time on my deck even more fun for everyone! What kind of party do you suggest? I'm pretty open to new ideas?
Tadema, You reminded me: "Remember..you have the deck! You are in control of the deck! You want you wife to appreciate the deck...? Take her out there and remind her why she was in awe of that deck in the first place!!! You and the deck need to take back what is yours!!" You really got me all pumped up with that kind of talk and my wife and I spent a good 2 hours on my deck this afternoon. I must admit that afterwards I did come inside for a while, but immediately went back out when she expressed a need to sit on the deck a bit longer while we just relaxed.
Tadema, Funny thing is that I think my neighbor with the large deck was watching us trying to get ideas of just how they could enjoy his deck better. His girlfriend had planted a rather large bush along the side of their house and I caught him using her bush for cover as he watched us. I was so proud to be back in control and having Mr Big Deck actually looking to me for deck usage tips! :) My wife even told me she knew we were being watched by my good looking neighbor and really didn't mind that much after she just let herself go and settle in on the deck! I was amazed at this new open-minded woman I was dealing with and I think my average size deck will be seeing a lot more fun times from this point on! I feel that we've reached a new level in our relationship and all thanks in large part to my neighbor's huge deck!
You can can enlarge a deck? Seriously? Well - I think that recent developements have convinced me that a big deck isn't everything and that sometimes we should just be happy with what we already have. Besides, after my wife spent a bit of time over on the neighbor's big deck, she seemed to come back and enjoy mine even that much more. Maybe she just needed a little variety in her life?! What do you think ladies? Would you like your men with average size decks to allow you to enjoy some big deck time once in a great while just for a little variety?
Hey Beelze, "For now, consider yourself fortunate for having any deck at all because there's a lot of deckless wonders out there who have never been complimented on the size of their deck." You're right and I do! I do - I do - I do! I would say those words over and over again just on the slight chance I could marry my wife all over again. It's been 13 years now and I still can't get enough of her.
Try shellacking it. A lot of people like a shiny deck, especially when it's all wet.
Shellacking my deck? I think I have already done that a time or two.
Be careful because if you shellack too much in one certain direction, it can actually change the natural curves of the wood and cause it to slightly bow to the left or right..depending upon which is your more dominant hand. :)
I can personally say from experience that that is nothing more than an old wive's tale to keep their husbands in line. Otherwise, I'd have a U shaped deck! LMAO!
Hahahaha no no, I encourage Fuzzy to shellack the deck often. He's usually a lot more up to work on the deck than I am. :)
ROTFLMAO! Yeah - I hear that happens to *most* married people after about 7 years or so. I'm sorry. Hell - At least give the guy a hand. ;)
Don't forget to wash under your deck and use a good water sealer. You don't want to get deck rot.
I hear that the older it gets, the lower certain sections of the deck start to hang pretty low. Gravity is tough on all things I suppose. :)
Funny one Dad2dabone.
Yikes! Deck rot? Makes my deck and "innie" just thinking about it! Yuk!
Tads, Once again I must acknowledge your demonstrated expertise in deck technology. You obviously have a very good *grasp* on the topic of decks and your advice should be given great thought. Thank you!
Thanks everygirl! Have any advice for us?
It has not gone unnoticed that the ladies have not answered the question I asked a few comments back, so I think I'll make a "Ballot" out of it. It was: "What do you think ladies? Would you like your men with average size decks to allow you to visit a big deck once in a great while just for a little variety?" Look for "Related Ballot" to vote and make comments.
So you're actually asking if we would like a swing on our deck, right?
Tads, LMAO! That's good Tads! You should make that into a "choice" so we can vote and rate it! I'd give that one a 5! Annnd yes - I'm asking just that. I am aware in our culture how hard this question is for ladies to answer without appearing to be too "deck happy" (insert your own word here), but that's the point I'm trying to make. If the question were: Men? Would you like your ladies to let you have a little "kittie" time away from home once every now and then for a bit of variety? Men would be all over this ballot answering mostly "Yes!". No more like "Hell yes!", and no one would really think too much of it, because they are just being men! If a woman should express the need for a little variety in her love life she is immediately labeled a (insert your own word again). Gimme a break. Just thought I would put it in a somewhat humorous manner as to make it easier for our female counterparts to HONESTLY answer it in a joking fashion without fear of judgment. Let's just say I was trying to give the ladies a chance to be honest while still having a way out through humor. ;) Part of the fun of this Site (to me) is that it gives us a chance to be brave, interact and learn from each other while under the comfort and security of an "alais", If we are not going to be honest than what the heck are we doing on here, but wasting time?
Hmmmmm? Wasting time? Kinda reminds me of an ole Eagles' tune! Oh yeah!
That was "Wasted Time" wasn't it? "You never thought you'd be alone This far down the line But I know what's been on your mind You're afraid it's all been wasted time" Is this all "Wasted Time"?
