Back in the mid 20th century American politicians had the wonderful idea to illegalize all drugs not typically used by white people (at that time at least) and as a result the mafia, which had been hit hard by the repealing of prohibition, now saw light at the end of the tunnel. Suppressing the 11th largest industry in the world (the illegal drug industry) caused a huge rise in crime that suddenly had to be fought. And who was going to pay the bill? The American taxpayer. So now the crime rate is up and so are our taxes, but it’s ok because now America has imprisoned the largest portion of its population of all the nations in the world. Let freedom ring!

I could never understand that either, its the same in Canada, keeping drugs illegal makes no sence.

Not really related to this ballot but, the mafia helped the U.S. during WWII by protecting the shipping docs they controlled from spies and enemy sabotage. I saw it on the History Channel.

I don't know if it is because a group of peopel are trying to legislate their own takes on "morality" or if there are other, more fiscal reasons, at work.

I suspect the former, though. They become victims of their own propoganda, within a generation or two.
