ARE AMERICA'S HIGH SCHOOLS OBSOLETE?

[+] serious ballot by Cathexis
created Mon Feb 28, 05
According to MicroSoft executive Bill Gates, America's high schools are obsolete.

"By obsolete, I don't just mean that they're broken, flawed, or underfunded," he said, "though a case could be made for every one of those points. By obsolete, I mean our high schools -- even when they're working as designed -- cannot teach all our students what they need to know today."

Do you agree with Bill Gates? Do you believe America's high schools are broken? If so, how? And how might this be corrected?

Couldnt tell you as I have been out of school for some time. When I graduated in 93 I had ZERO computer experience, that hurt, but I am sure they have corrected that by now.

I think High School should be harder though, I hated school but I think it was because it was boring.

The only thing that really concerns me about Canadian high schools is they use Mac, WTF are they thinking?

I graduated high school last year. I still know jackshit about computers. I learned more in high school on my own time than I did in class time. I really pretty disgusted that I had to spend 12 years in school for what I ended up getting out of it.

As far as computer experience, i dont think they should put much focus on that, it changes to quickly and every company uses its own software. I took my 1st computer class in grade 8 (1979) and there is nothing the same.

But you need a foundation in computers. Do you know how dumb I felt when I went into the Air Force in 1994 and had to use one for the first time and didnt know how to use the mouse? It was awful, I was embarrassed. And at this time the military was using E-mail as its primary source of communication, I had never heard of e-mail.

in junior high, we were taught how to use DOS, I weas looking for a place on this new computer to type
in "Run" lol
by Duckhead on Mon Feb 28, 05 2:14pm [+]

I still use run for certain commands, type dxdiag under run and it will tell you all the hardware and software on your PC
by ABC on Mon Feb 28, 05 2:22pm [+]

yea i guess a lot of what we learned was useless

I think Canadian Universities could use an overhaul too. In a first year computer course, they just learn the stuff they learned in high school.

GRADE schools aren't geared to prepare kids for real life. My niece is in the fifth grade, and all she's learning is how to take tests to insure that the state maintains its funding. One MORE reason I have not to like Republican policies (both the governor and the Secretary of Education are GOP, and under their fine leadership, Georgia now vacillates between 49th and 50th in the nation in overall test scores).
by Truthseeker013 on Mon Feb 28, 05 5:35pm [+]

hell no, most of the stuff is unneeded anyway.
by Gorre on Mon Feb 28, 05 5:36pm [+]

Of course American high schools are obsolete. I would hope public education will be scrapped for private education for all.
by lowerclassbrats on Mon Feb 28, 05 8:51pm [+]

Yeah, but we do okay compared to most other advanced nations.
