HAS 911 MADE AMERICA A MORE INTOLERANT PLACE TO LIVE?

We have all been pretty good at focusing on the ‘good’ changes that have taken place in America since the attack, such as the outpouring of patriotism. But I think that we are hiding one of the biggest and most damaging changes from entering the public forum and that has been the dramatic increase in intolerance since 911.

Journalists have shown polls that convey that Americans were more tolerant of homosexuals before the attack and the number of people that supported gay marriage prior to it held a slim majority (now the opposite side has the majority). We heard of the racist attacks on Arab Americans, as well as our disregard for their freedom by denying them their constitutional rights by locking them in prison without legal council and without setting a trial date (believe me I think this is one of the biggest injustices of our day but most of America is silent about it. It will come back to haunt us). We are polarized now because Americans now have stereotypical views of what a liberal or conservative is (they are just different ideologies not separate cultures). If America wishes to truly recover from the 911 attacks we are going to have to embrace a lot more than we marginalize and isolate. We may be too vain to admit it but we still have a long road till we recover from this.

Has 911 made America a more intolerant place to live?

Yes 19
No 18

No, the Bush administration has. Look, I, know this may sound arrogant, but I swear I don't mean it to be. To have witnessed what happened on that day first hand was an event that will forever torment me. TV just cannot convey what it was like. The sheer panic on people's faces. There were people JUMPING out of tht towers to escape the flames. It was more hoffific than any movie I have seen so far. It has changed our psyche, but the Amerian people are not intollerant, the Bush administration is a whore that has tried to capitalize on that event; they have an agenda and they have milked that day to justify their own actions. There is an element of the people who listen to Bush and think "wow, what IF he's right and these people want to slaughter us?" Though there is part of them that realizes the Bush people are using 9/11 for their own ends, the fear factor takes over. I think that Bush has tried to play to our worst fears, but I also think that the situation is getting ahead of him and he no longer controls it...it controls him!

9/11 was a field day for all the paranoid, nationalistic bigots. Their fondest dreams of oppression are coming true. Unfortunatly, the evil Patriot Act is just the beginning.

Exactly what I was going to say patch. You could find examples in any number of countries where you could find intolerance. Why just pick on the US?
