IS THIS FAIR??

Should you have to schedule a doctor's appointment in order to get a refill on an allergy or birth control medication? These are non-habit-forming drugs, available over-the-counter in most countries outside the U.S. Is it right for a doctor to demand you come in for an appointment in order to pay him $75-150 for nothing but the 'privilege' of getting the refill?

Bear in mind that if you can only afford catastrophic health insurance, the cost of this appointment, as well as the medication, comes out of your pocket.

Also bear in mind that the doctor has already extracted his pound of flesh in his initial consultation.

Is this fair?

Just another proud moment in the American healthcare system. If they REALLY gave a rat's a$$ about patient care...

It's wrong and it's not capitalism, not even close. Our pharmacies should be like Mexico's.

Sometimes they may do that because of potential side effects you may have been having. In your case though, I think the doc is just trying to get more billable patients.

I take a controlled substance for my ADD and I do need to come into my doctor's office, but only to pick up some scripts made by my doctor; I don't have to schedule a full appointment. It seems odd that you would have to schedule a full appointment for a non-habit-forming allergy or birth control medication.
by nuckinfutz on Wed Apr 27, 05 6:20pm [+]

Should be able to phone it in and the doc can approve the request. Once it's approved you should be able to go pick it up.

I used to have a doctor that required me to make an appointment every week while I was on the medication, but I found another doctor that didn't require it.

my dad and my doctor calls prescriptions in when they need refilling as long as last visit was not more than six months

There is absolutely a de-facto conspiracy between doctors and prescription drug companies to line both their pockets. Is it fair? Of course not. Is it real, of course.

The game is simple: You have to have a "family practicianer's" referral before you can go to any specialist. Try it, if you don't believe me.

Next, the drug companies compensate doctors (via drug "samples," and even kickbacks, according to the AARP), and high priced, non-generic, drugs are prescribed. It is a circle of self-promotion.

Doesn't this make you wish you'd have invested in drug companies or HMO's a few years ago?

Demented stuff. But maybe that's just me.

Thanks for your ballot.

No, its not fair at all. The patient could maybe tell the Dr. that it seemed unreasonable and financially irresponsible. Could the Dr. give a 3 month or longer prescription?

Extortion has become a standard business practice in the Medical field. We are at their mercy so all we can do is bend over and take their medicine.

It's idiotic. I have a medication I take once per year for a skin condition. The medication costs $10, but I have to have an office visit before my dermatologist will write the prescription each year. So he gets $85 bucks for writing the same prescription once per year. He didn't even examine me last time, just walked in, glad-handed me, then walked out.
