The question of "if we evolved from the apes, why are there still apes?" has become a cliche of creationists. I've even thrown it around myself for amusement. There is, however, an answer: According to Darwin (that demon of evangelical Christians), the only apes who evolved were those that migrated out of Africa, and through "natural selection" (I won't bore you with a synopsis) became different from their primate ancestors. So, the apes who were contented with their environment did not evolve into men because they did not have to adapt to new conditions.
As to your specific question, humans are considered by evolutionists to be "highly evolved primates," of which apes are only one classification.

Well, putting it that way is rather crude. I probably wouldn't mention that were it not for the fact that the concept of man evolving from primates is viewed as crude by so many people. How could it be that WE, the human race, the most superior species on the planet, ever descended from creatures "lower" than ourselves..??
Personally, I feel in some ways, we devolved.

The scientific term for human beings, HOMO SAPIENS, should be changed. "Sapiens" is Latin for "wise", which is what very few people are; otherwise, we humans would have since come up with nonviolent solutions to this world's problems. How about calling humans "HOMO STUPIDUS"?

Jeez, let me guess, how much scientific literature have you actually read ? None? Guess so. Why are there dolphins and porpoises and no dolphin/porpoises? Why no Zebra/Horses?
Because they are different SPECIES, some of which survive and evolve and some of which don't.
I guess those crazy people who were fooled by almost identical DNA, physiological characteristics and other "evidence" rather than by a 4,000 year old BOOK.
Next they'll look at all the evidence from plate tectonics, the decay rates of certain minerals, the movement and properties of the stars and planets, the formation of oil and coal, and all other strata of the earth's crust, and so on and so forth that points to a rather ancient earth and older universe and actually buy the idea that the earth is more than 4-6,000 years old - what lunatics! What business do they have doing research and coming to conclusions! They must be stopped! ARRRRGGHHHHHHHH!

Have you ever whatched a group of young chimpanzees at play and then go look at a group of small human children at play? the only difference is that humans (in some cases) have clothes on.
Decades ago, Desmond Morris, a zoologist, wrote an interesting book called THE NAKED APE.
I read it as a teenager, and it put me firmly in my place within the Animal Kingdom.
Among the Primates
(Monkeys to you plebes) the highest classification is that group of larger(tail-less?) monkeys referred to as The Great Apes.
Chimpanzees, Orangutangs, Silverback Gorilla,etc.
