i dunno about that. But i know that liberating blacks wasn't out of the goodness of his heart. It was to destroy the economy of the south

If my memory serves me correctly the answer is yes.I recall a plan that he was invovled with or advocated that called for sending them to Brasil or another south American country.

Now let's see all the democrats who've claimed lincoln as one of their own all these years go into fits, either that or backpedal like crazy.

If memory serves, when he issued the Empancipation Proclamation, he did it in the hopes that all the Blacks would pick up and hie themselves back to Africa, thereby relieving the U.S. of one of the major beefs of the Civil War.

I always though Lincoln was a Republican?

Or am I incorrect?
by Steelhamster on Wed May 25, 05 9:23pm [+]

Lincoln was a republican. But everytime a republican mentions that republicans freed the slaves democrats always claim lincoln as a progressive liberal, one of their own boys. I wonder if they still will in light of this, of if lincoln will become a republican again.

Doesn't this date back a little further? And involve sending them to what is now Liberia.... whose capital is MONROVIA as in Monroe (the president)?
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Wed May 25, 05 10:45pm [+]

I would hazard a guess that if Abraham Lincoln were alive today, he would be attacked for his 'liberal' ideas.

Republicans 140 odd years ago are not the Republicans we have today, or do I read it wrong?
by Steelhamster on Wed May 25, 05 11:09pm [+]

I think that Lincoln was primarily interested in the perservation of the Union. However Liberia was created in and around the time of the Civil War, so yes he favored sending them off.
by xxxxxxxx on Wed May 25, 05 11:36pm [+]

Well I don't think that Lincoln today would be considered a lib. But you can't really compare. It is as futile as trying to say would Jefferson be a Dem or Repub. He probably would have been for whoever was the farmer as he considered farmers the backbone of the country. So Jefferson would support Archer-Daniels-Midland. See how futile it is?
by xxxxxxxx on Wed May 25, 05 11:42pm [+]

I would agree that Democrats of old would probably be Republincs today, so you made the point I was trying to make, in a round about way
by Steelhamster on Wed May 25, 05 11:47pm [+]

Fiddle,

Liberia traces its official state history to 1822 when freed African-American slaves immigrated to the West African coastline. By 1847 they drafted a constitution and launched the first independent state in non-Arab Black Africa. The freedmen modeled their government on the United States and adopted the name Liberia, which is Latin for "place of freedom."

From a text I have here.

Monrovia is named for Monroe who was the fifth president and served two terms 1817-8125

Yes, here's some aspect of Abraham Lincoln that white conservatives can truly embrace. Now I understand why Bob Dole has always referred to the Republican Party as the "Party of Lincon."

That's one of the reasons why Lincoln is so popular: there is something about him for everyone to like. His favor for deporting blacks is something that white conservatives can love, and his freeing of the slaves, with the Emancipation Proclamation, and the ass-kicking of the racist, slave-owning, regressive South is something that liberals can love. What a guy!
