poverty, but you liberals who use that and overpopulation to justify abortion shouldnt mind too much.
Hey, Reb, I don't think anyone of any political persuasion is actually in favor of abortion. Ugly business, and in my mind, immoral. My position, and that of many "liberals" is that the state should not be involved in the woman's decision about abortion. And the impact of outlawing abortion would be to drive poor women to back alley practitioners, and to jail, while rich women flew to Switzerland or some other place to have their abortions. I hate abortion, but I hate the thought of government intervention in the decision even more. And while we are on the subject, have you noticed that conservatives seem always to want the government out of your life decisions, but when you disagree with an action that another person considers freedom, you want the government coming down on them? Kind of strange. I'm not trying to start a firestorm here, but there are some contradictions in position...some dare call it hypocrisy.
griffon with all due respect, that back ally thing does not work for me, people do all kinds of terrable things that are not legal, including killing new born babies , but I'm sure no one would say, make it legal so they won't be thrown in a dumbster. I know this ballot isn't about abortion, sorry steel, but it was brought up. I'll even accept the womens choice to do what she wants with her body over the back ally abortions as a reason not to make it illegal.
But for the record, I'm still against abortions
Don't call steel a liberal.
I'm sad to say.. I got this one right. :(
But according to rich conservatives, poverty builds character.
There's a cold dose of reality. But rather than acknowledge it, many of us will sidetrack the focus to grounds on which they feel more comfortable.
I think it is terrable cathexis, only reason I said what I did was in responce to giffons statement. It's rediculous people are dying from hunger in a world of surplus. There was a time when simply was not enough food to feed the world hungry, but that time is gone, and we should all be ashamed this is allowed to happen.
"we should all be ashamed", exactly

BTW, the reduction in the crime rate (in 90s and now) has been statistically linked to the Roe V Wade decision. Source: Freakonomics (It is a book)
Thank you all for your contributions, I am heartened that this issue crosses both sides of the political spectrum and level heads outnumber those who only see things in partisan ways.
cranky Growing up poor does build character. Have you ever met someone that was spoiled their entire life? Those people have about as much personality and conviction as my left nut.
So obviously you've grown up poor?

Poverty, eh? Is that the official cause of death on the coronors' reports?
mastubation?
Cathexis and Steelhamster both of you have chided me in the past for not cititng a source on things like this. So where did this information come from? I am not disputing it just curious. Look, Jeffery Sachs has said time and time again that (specifically) the US has not met its committment to actually allocate the dollars to Milenium Goals. America has repeatedly committed to donate seven-tenths of 1% of GDP to economic aid and development. We have never come close to this figure. Very sad and hypocritical. When all those Americans blew their stack about that Dutch economist for the UN that pointed this out I just laughed. We don't have to give anyone anything, but if you make a promise you should deliver. This has been a consistent problem throughout various administrations and Congress. So you stupid lefties don't try to blame Bush. Clinton had the same disease: overpromise and then don't deliver. Also Tony Blair has it right. These debts that developing world incurred during the Cold War should be forgiven. We gave money to people like Mobutu Sese Seko just so that he would be on our side, nominally. Now we all now that Seko basically took all that money and never ever even considered helping his people. The US got what it paid for in Seko. Now we expect the poor people of the Congo to pay us back? It is bloody ridiculous as TB said. The Russians did the same. Example India. We were buying the lip-service of dictators (US and USSR) and we got what we paid for. Now we want repayment? UN Milenium Goals should be met. We have already said we would give that money. Now it is time to deliver. Some Scandanavian countries already give more than 1% of GDP. We are talking about less than 1%! not 10.
Michael Jackson?
There are several sources, but the best one I can cite is the new Make Poverty History campaign, which is an off shoot of the Live Aid, which will culminate in a concert in the summer.
Yep, and what causes poverty? Overwhelmingly it seems to be leftwing governments. Don't believe me? Ask your average north korean how wealthy he is, or zimbabwean, or chinese person. It's easy to see but people won't acknowledge it; ocialism kills.
Inter: it doesn't matter how much the US, or any other nation donates. Without changing the basic government structure and society of these nations it will do no good, at best it will make a few people temporarily better off, the government and military richer than hell, and wipe out all local businesses. In a year the bank accounts of el generalisimo will be full, and the people will be starving, all the while western liberals will chide the US for not giving more, forgetting just what happened to last years donations. Giving temporary aid to natural disaster victims, yes, that makes sense. It was no ones fault and there is no way to change it in the future. Giving money to governments of nations that are perpetualy poor because of their corrupt government, waste of money.
What on earth has Socialism got to do with Zimbabwe, China and NorthKorea? I really wish Herzog would at least learn about what it is about real socialism he hates, instead of that cold war claptrap, he was indoctrinated with.
