North America’s first solar-powered community will soon see the light of day in the sunny southern Alberta town of Okotoks. The 52-home Drake Landing Solar Community will begin construction this summer, with backing from the Canadian and Alberta governments, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and numerous industry partners.

Solar power will meet 90 per cent of the heating and hot water needs of this eco-community, being developed by Sterling Homes. Up to 1.5 megatonnes of thermal power will be collected by 800 solar connectors on the homes’ interconnected garages. The energy will then be transferred to a storage area beneath a neighbourhood park. In winter, this stored thermal power will be transferred as hot water through underground pipes to a central district heating system to heat the homes.

Sounds great to me, an efficient house for 220,000 Canadian.
