CONGRESSIONAL TERM LIMITS: YOUR THOUGHTS?

[+] serious ballot by xxxxxxxx
created Fri Jun 10, 05
In the 1995 "Contract with America," the new Republican-dominated Congress talked heavily about Congressional term limits. I actually agree with the GOP -- term limits would be a nice idea -- let people cycle out before they become Washington mainstays and potentially lose touch with their constituency. Unfortunately, like all good ideas, the Republicans quickly abandoned it.

Here's my proposition: limit House members to five two-year terms and Senate members to two six-year terms. Current House members having served five or more terms would be grandfathered until the end of this current term. Current Senate members would be grandfathered until the end of their current terms. All of this can be negotiable.

Your thoughts?

I like the idea of term limits. 11
I dislike the idea of term limits. 2

No, if the people still want them, let them stay.

Agree with Reb. I can't imagine that in an alleged democracy, that the people can't elect whomever they wish for however many terms they choose. Confusing. Understand the intent, but disagree with the outcome.

It is indeed ironic to term limit elected officials in order to prevent the accumulation of power, and yet allow lobbyists, PAC's and special interests to bribe our officials and hijack our freedom without any limitation.
by xxxxxxxx on Fri Jun 10, 05 11:57pm [+]

Thats the real problem. The lobbyists, we need to limit them, a term limit cant fix that problem.
by JohnnyReb on Sat Jun 11, 05 12:22am [+]

I think it was ruled unconstitutional. An amendment to the constitution would be required.

There are already term limits, it is called voting.

I would be more concerned about those appointed to the Supreme Court personally, they are there to they die or step down.

These guys have a lot ofpower and if the balance is tilted too much one way or the other, then they can hand down judgements that go way against public opinion.
by Steelhamster on Sat Jun 11, 05 6:29am [+]

I agree entirely. Give them just enough time to see through any programs or bills that they may institute, but not enough time for them to become insiders, allowing lobbyists (pausing to wash my mouth out, forgive the foul word, ladies) to altch on.

Uh, make that "latch", please.

Steelhamster, you bring up a good point about the Supremes. This current court is breaking all records for length of time that they have sat together. I

I don't generally support term limits, even in the presidency, but I think an 18 year term would be more appropriate than a lifetime appointment for judicial appointees.
by xxxxxxxx on Sat Jun 11, 05 5:04pm [+]

Good Idea but might I suggest changing 2yr terms to 4. How do you get anything done if you're constantly campaigning?
by lowerclassbrats on Sat Jun 11, 05 11:30pm [+]

lcb, you're from the Golden State, right?. The changes that have taken place in Cal due to term limits are enormous and none of them are very good.
by xxxxxxxx on Sun Jun 12, 05 2:41am [+]

There should be term limits, at all levels of government, of all elected officials. There are many many good and qualified people who could lead. Elected office without term limits breeds pigs at the trough who forget who we little people are.
