GEORGE WASHINGTON IN SCHOOLS

[+] ballot by larrynelmira
created Sun Jun 19, 05
This is kinda old news, but another ballot I made, caused me to think of it.

In some predominately black schools , they want to remove George Washington's picture, saying it is an insult, because Washington owned slaves.

Those against this, use the arguement that it was a different mind set back then, when slavery was acceptable, and he was our first President and should be honored as such.

How do you feel about this matter?

keep George in the school 8
remove George from the school 0
don't know 0

COMMENTS:
That's just plain sad.

Political correctness erasing our first president from the wall? Scary stuff. His having owned slaves should be a springboard for a discussion about that moral issue, not something to ignore or cover up.

Just my opinion.

I agree with you mojo
by larrynelmira on Sun Jun 19, 05 8:18am [+]

not that slavery should have ever been acceptable, but like it or not, many people of that time thought it was, we can't change that.
by larrynelmira on Sun Jun 19, 05 8:36am [+]

also, majority of residence in washington dc are black, if we use the schools as a precedent, the name of our capital would have to be changed

^ Hahahah! That'll be next, lol.

Yes, D.C. will be redubbed "Queen Latifah-ville".
by Felix on Sun Jun 19, 05 10:16am [+]

This sounded like a herzog ballot. A one time event that he exagerates implying that all predominately black schools want this.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Sun Jun 19, 05 10:56am [+]

I said in some fiddle, this is perfect example of how it is impossible to discuss minorities, political correctness at its worse. I made a ballot about 75507 as to people saying , "yeah but everyone did that in those days", which reminded me of this news story. My God fiddle, why does everything have to be racist. It was a fact, a story about how SOME predominately black schools , I didn't make it up, was just asking what peoples opinon was on it.

by larrynelmira on Sun Jun 19, 05 11:13am [+]

Actually I resent what you are implying.

errrr, where did you get that from in this ballot?
by larrynelmira on Sun Jun 19, 05 11:31am [+]

I was not even trying to imply all black schools want that, that wasn't even part of my thoughts. You are the one who apparently jumped to that conclusion
by larrynelmira on Sun Jun 19, 05 11:35am [+]

If they pull Washington, then Jefferson has to go as well, followed by who knows who else in the Slave-Ownership Club. Slaqvery was awful, a dark stain on history in general. But blaming Whites alone for it is inaccurate, because there were a number of African chieftains who sold their own tribespeople into slavery, or kidnapped neighboring tribespeople to that end. Let's be even in where we point our fingers of blame.
by Truthseeker013 on Sun Jun 19, 05 12:00pm [+]

what am implying? I've never heard of such a thing as you mention.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Sun Jun 19, 05 1:47pm [+]

This is a herzog ballot, I don't know why I ever responded. So this happened in one or two schools. Who cares. There have probably been a couple of schools who wanted to start a KKK or white peoples club. Whatever. It is not relevant. I hear this stuff all the time. Take one extreme liberal professor from a college and then smear every college professor there is with the same brush. One example of "political correctness" equals an issue? I don't think so. It is more an issue of stupidity with a couple of schools. There are plenty of africentric schools I know of and not a single one has proposed this. Case closed.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Sun Jun 19, 05 2:06pm [+]

Ah fiddle, we really shouldn't post anything that might make you uncomfortable. Like those guys who dragged a black man to death in jasper texas, that shouldn't have been reported because it was just one instance and it might make people think all whites are like that. Right?

I love how you don't bother to contradict the facts of an article and merely attack the user. Good strategy, you could be michael moores sidekick one day.

Back to the actual ballot at hand: I suppose they will also stop teaching about roman, greek, indian (american variety), arab, and african history as all those people owned slaves at one point? Seems only fair. If we're to begin scratching people out from our history books because they weren't politically correct (ever read 1984?) then why not go all the way and get rid of everyone. Make up a new history that everyone can enjoy. Facts aren't as important as feelings.
by herzog on Sun Jun 19, 05 2:50pm [+]

oh, you decide which ballots are relevent, didn't realize we had to run them by you before posting.

again you are wrong if you think I was singling out blacks, it just so happen in this situation the parties were black. Not only that, the ballot could have been used to spotlight the hypocricy of Washington or our founding fathers, and also as I said before, it was made in direct link to another ballot I made about how people used the arguement YEAH, BUT EVERYONE DID THAT IN THOSE DAYS
75507

This is my last comment on this ballot, if you want the last word take it.
by larrynelmira on Sun Jun 19, 05 3:14pm [+]

They should put up pictures of Michael Jackson, instead.
by cranky on Sun Jun 19, 05 3:18pm [+]

Herzog. How you can compare something stupid like the incident in this ballot to someone being dragged behind a vehicle is so preposterous it is unbelievable.

I guess things people say here never seem to amaze me, but you took the cake on that one.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Sun Jun 19, 05 3:54pm [+]

and larry, you often make ballots with very weak analogies and wonder why people don't understand them. Why not try to make better analogies first?
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Sun Jun 19, 05 3:55pm [+]

sorry you feel that way fiddle, you seem to have problems taking crit. even when you are wrong, I at least admit some things I say or do are not right.
by larrynelmira on Sun Jun 19, 05 4:03pm [+]

it's not always about you
by larrynelmira on Sun Jun 19, 05 4:06pm [+]

Because fiddle, you think it is wrong to portray any isolated events that may cause some people to make broad assumptions about an entire group of people. Or rather, you selectively oppose them. Anything that may make blacks look bad is verboten, anything that makes whites look bad should be front page news. You think perception is more important than facts, and that is a very dangerous stance. You'll of course note that you didn't bother to contradict any of the facts presented, instead you attacked the messenger and stated that these sorts of things shouldn't be reported because it could give people the wrong idea. Essentially you are arguing in favor of censorship.
by herzog on Sun Jun 19, 05 4:08pm [+]

Herzog, it is beyond me how any HUMAN can make a comparison between stupid political correctness and a violent crime. But then again, I think I just answered my question.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Sun Jun 19, 05 4:58pm [+]

I'll spell it out for you simply: both involve changing or ignoring reality to avoid causing offense to particular groups. This is absolutely wrong and leads to very bad things. The truth, no matter how unpleasant, should always take precedence over a persons or a groups feelings. Or shall we change all of history to avoid hurting anyones feelings? Any decent textbook will contain things that might make you feel bad, if you are so inclined. Doesn't matter what group you belong to, all have some skeletons in their closet. Why then should we erase the faults of one group to avoid offending certain people, and not erase the faults of every group? Why any person would favor race-based censorship is beyond me. Please explain why you do.
