as for this question, i think protectionist trade practices, such as overly-assesed tarriffs, are more of an obstacle in the long run and just lead to trade wars.

Most protectionist policies hurt a nations economy.Tarriffs for example lead to trade wars,as Kev24 said and limits on trade items ultimately hurt the consumer.

To me, it's a balancing act that has yet to be perfected. Some trade can help foster competition by forcing producers of goods to build a better mousetrap, while some trade blockages can hurt consumers by forcing them to accept sub-standard materiel.
