THE PRESIDENT SAYS "THE TERRORISTS CANNOT SHAKE OUR WILL." ISN'T IT NAIVE TO ASSUME THAT WE CAN SHAKE THEIR WILL?

The president, in his weekly radio address, said: "The terrorists cannot shake our will." That's good to know, but not very reassuring. What does it mean? If it means that we are resolved to make our country and our world safer, that's fantastic, and I don't know of anyone who doesn't want that badly. If it means that we believe that terrorism can ever be "defeated"--in the conventional sense of the word--through sheer force of will, then that is incorrect, because terrorism is not a group of people, it is a means of coercion and intimidation.

It would be like assuming that freedom can be defeated through sheer force of will.

COMMENTS:
We've been gnawing at the insurgents for coming up on three and a half years now, and I see no signs of give in them to date. Every day we (the U.S.) stands there and declares itself resolute gives them a reason to stand their ground in return.

Maybe not, but we certainly have the means at our disposal to eventually wipe them off the face of the planet. Sorry to be so blunt.

you wouldn't be suggesting that our president is naive, would you? Imagine that! Does he think this a third grade staring contest? The simplicity of his thinking gives a bad connotation to the word simple. What "will" are the terrorists trying to shake? Our "will" to force our way of life on the rest of the world? They're not trying to "shake our will" - they're trying to punish and intimidate us because they don't like what we do, and they want the world to operate under their rules.

It is naive and foolish to to as we have been doing: Reducing this to a ****ing contest, as if both sides were junior high boys and all we have to do is show who is "tougher."

This kind of problem needs adult leadership, consisting of intelligence, strategy, diplomacy, influence, and a grasp on the realities of the problem; not groundless machismo and posturing that merely exacerbates the problems.

A battle of wills is the only battle a terrorist can win. As long as we continue to stand for freedom and justice they cannot win.

Nonsense.

This is not a battle of wills and it is simplistic to reduce it to such.

We need to acknowledge the nature of the enemy and develop methods that will be effective against this enemy ... not delude ourselves that our single off-the-shelf approach is a one-size fits all for all enemies and all we have to do is Stay the Course.

Look what happened to the USSR when they took that approach, in Afghanistan.
