Someone in my family used to make racial slurs about black people, and we regularly fought about it. Now he's forgiven the blacks (after seeing a documentary about lynchings and getting to know a couple of blacks) and has moved onto - his words - 'towel heads.'

No, because if leftists hated patriotic Americans then they would be hating themselves. Better they hate traitors like Karl Rove.
I don't think bigotry is necessarily related to one's political affiliation.
I think hated of blacks by whites was due to irrational fear and the fact that someone looked different than themselves. It was also due to people being taught to hate at an early age.
The problem with people developing hatred or fear of muslims is similar in some ways and different in others. Primarily the fear and hatred is based on ignorance. However, much of this fear and ignorance is fed by the acts of a few extremists that people can readily identify as muslims.
It is important that people understand that the actions of extremists of all religious or ethnic groups are not reflective as a whole. This is easier said than done as people seem to have a natural fear or hatred of things or people they do not understand.
I don't entirely disagree with F.F.L.S.D.'s statements, HOWEVER, I do think that having serious issues with the lack of assimilation of millions of European Muslims and the millions more who actively support terrorist groups and activities is not "bigotry," but, rather, self preservation. Groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood, Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, Jemaah Islamiyah, and their ilk actively despise Western culture and quite frankly in their public proclamations wish to see its downfall. They also have taken hundreds of actions to target Western interests and interests in Muslim-majority nations which they see as being "anti-Islamic." When one sees that over 30% of all Lebanese support suicide terrorist bombers, for example, a rational mind must take pause.
So, to sum up, while it's unfair and immoral, at least in my estimation, to tar all Muslims as being terrorists or seek to deprive them of their civil rights as based solely on the fact of their religion, it is merely common sensical to realize that not all Muslims are "peace-loving" or so enamored with our culture. I do think the hardcore leftists who want to use the customary stalling tactic of screaming "Bigot!" whenever anyone points these facts suffer from a real lack of perspective and a certain degree of self destructiveness. Because, to be blunt, with their lifestyles, they'd likely be the first victims of strict shariah once a Taliban took over in their area.

Of course any conservative bias against muslims or blacks pales in comparison to liberal bias against jews and christians.

No party presently has an active klansmember in the Senate. Although, if the Republicans did, Hater Herzog would be proud and defend him. The last active Klansman to run for Congress was David Duke, and he ran as a Republican and is still thought of fondly by many of Hater Herzog's Texas neighbors.
There is nothing in America to compare with the hatred that white conservatives, like Herzog, have for blacks, and now, Muslims.
And worldwide, the Holocaust was the worst act of bigotry against Jews, killing millions (including many liberals) and that was a conservative initiative done by Hater Herzog's German soulmates.

In 1988 Duke ran for president under the Populist Party's banner. Later that year he won a seat in the state House in Louisiana.
In 1990, Duke emerged as a state political force when he ran for Senate as a Republican and garnered 44 percent, holding Democratic Sen. Bennett Johnston to 54 percent.
In 1991, national Republicans supported Democrat-turned-Republican former Gov. Buddy Roemer for the governorship over Duke. Still Duke got 32 percent of the vote in the open primary, just beating out Roemer.

You really have no clue what conservative means do you? By one definition it means keeping the government small and protecting individual rights, that had nothing to do with the nazis. Another definition has it as keeping things the same, hitler made radical changes in every aspect of german society. Nope, no conservative at all.
Now which party is it that favors change and expansion of government?
