There are bad apples in every race, just as there are good ones, so no big deal.
It only gets annoying when whole races or religions are marginalized as being "this" way or "that" way. Individuals are always fair game, or should be.
Although, to me, race is pretty irrelevant. I prefer to see people as individuals for who they are and for what they've become, regardless of race or creed.

If you say, or imply, something bad about people who are in certain, protected minority classes then yes you are a racist. If a white guy runs over your dog and you call him an asshole, that's fine. If a black guy runs over your dog and you call him an asshole you're a racist.
You see, they were once slaves, and you owned them, so you can't criticize blacks for anything, even if it would be fair game with people of another skin color and has nothing to do with race.
The same goes for women, homosexuals, any religion other than christianity, asians (unless they have money) and jews.
ANYONE who drove over my dog would be called an asshole. I'd scream it out loud right there in the street for all the world to hear!

That said, I think that a lot of racism hides behind the sheets as "just the facts." And the fact is that no person, much less no whole race of people, exists that doesn't have many faults, and we could, if we chose, truthfully focus on these faults to the exclusion of other equally true virtues. This kind of truth is a particularly virulent form of racism.
Not being accusatory here. I take your point and agree that simply being critical does not make one a racist. But we have to be careful. Such affect-laden terms like "inbred," "hick," "ignorant Black," etc., are red flags indicating a strong possibility of racial prejudice. One might imagine these terms as dialect nouns (such as the word "nigger" was used in the the American South to describe any Black person), but in modern usage, they point to the user as, at best, unaware, and at worst, an ignorant racist.

Whatever happened centuries ago should be put aside by now. No-one alive today is responsible for what our ancestors were - or weren't - a party to.
The best gift we can offer future generations is to ensure that we aren't revisited by some of the old hatreds and urges our ancestors may have been prone to.
I also think being politically correct is a form of ignorance and brainwashing.
Everyone deserves dignity and respect if they're worthy of it, regardless of ethnicity or religion. If that's PC, then oh well. I really don't care about labels. It's what in the jar that counts.

Yes, I am. I'm Scottish. And ashamedly, some of my ancestors may have profited quite well from the slave trade. But should I feel guilty? Nope - I myself didn't contribute to it, and I don't believe guilt can - or should - be inherited.
I don't know herzog well enough to tell, but when I read that comment I thought he was joking in a sarcastic way. Cause unless your like 180 years old you never owned a slave in this country. BTW - My grandfather said NO to his inheritance on principle, so neither the profit nor the guilt was inherited by him.
He declared it to be 'Dirty Money' and would have nothing to do with it, so it was passed to another relative instead.

Anyone who makes ballots criticizing another race runs the danger of being labelled racist.
Most criticism stems from a poor understanding of different cultures. Making generalisations about Mexicans or Asians or any other group is obviously racist by its very nature. Calling someone an asshole for for deliberately killing your pet is not racist.
Some people here on b&w really need to consider their comments and ballots cafefully. Many are obviously racist and proud of it. Others, however, are being labelled racist because they don't think about what they are writing about.

cathexis is right in my opinion, as is herzog. but, the difference is herzog, someone calling you a racist and you/me/anybody actually being a racist, are two different things. anyone can call you that, but it doesn't make it true.
No, it doesn't make it true and I never thought it did.
Accusations of witchcraft rarely had any real evidence behind them, and were never true, but the consequences were very real for the accused. Cries of racism are similiar to that witchburning era. If you don't like someone it's no difficulty to dig up some trivial detail and use that to 'prove' accusations of racism. And once the accusation has been made there is no real defense. You have to apologize profusely, and still suffer, or fight back and suffer more.

Those individuals who are racist have far more in common with the people who burned witches. They worked on fear, paranoia and plain old ignorance.
Racism is easy to spot, just look for those who make racist comments or argue from a racist standpoint. That's all the evidence you need.
