Journalist Seymour Hersh has exposed attempts to fix the Iraq elections of January 30, 2005.

We already knew the myriad problems that undermined the initial undertaking: The lack of international observers present to certify a free and fair election, the massive fraud in the Kurdish areas of Northern Iraq (sanctioned by the United States, Hersh reveals), and the massive ballot-box stuffing all over the country.

And we knew that about a third of the country boycotted the election because they saw it as a rigged affair.

But what we did not know, until now, is the extent to which the United States funded both campaign activities and outright fraud on behalf of its hand-picked candidate, Iyad Allawi.

UHhh we do practice it. And funding a campaign isn't anti-democracy.

Dani: Foreign countries pouring money into a national election hardly seems Democratic.

Oh, and in case you missed it ... there was also "outright fraud."

But then again ... you may be used to this, after these past five years or so.

I'm sure I'm not the only person in the US who rolled his eyes and threw up his hands in disgust when we heard that the Bush admin. is going to hold free elections for the Iraqi people when he has no interest in any kind of fair contest here or elsewhere.

I remember a phrase from one of "The three musketeers" movie; they were talking about the siege of La Rochelle and the conclusion was: "we bombed them to teach them what christian mercy is". I think is quite suited to our modern problem.

Hmmm.

Point 1: We did not need to "fix" the election results in Iraq. We simply applied the same rules of "democracy" we practice at home: Select all the candidates who get to run, get the population to see this as a real democratic choice, and win however it comes out.

Point 2: American Democracy in action: One candidate for President receives 500,000 more votes than another, but is "defeated" in the race.

Actually, Cathexis, we are not spreading democracy in the world, we are contaminating the world with the American brand of Oligarchy.
