I'm not sure if the Saudi Arabians would be classified as Islamic fundamentalists but they are the worst perpetrators of this horror.

nobody cares because the perpetrators are not white and any criticism of them would be "Politicaly incorrect"

here is a link: www.hrw.org/ backgrounder/ africa/ sudanupdate.htm

Or you can just go to the site and search on sudan and slavery.

This one is about child slavery and children forced to be soldiers: www.hrw.org/ reports/ 1995/ Sudan.htm

The site is Human Rights Watch. Sudan is the tragedy of our time.

Agree that there are many slaves in Africa, and find this reprehensible. Still, however we may despise them, there is no necessary connection between Islamic fundamentalism and slavery. Don't dispute that some Islamic fundamentalists are involved in slavery. Imagine many other stripes of folk are also involved.

The Koran does not prohibit slavery, it only admonishes the master to be fair with his slaves.

The Bible does not prohibit slavery, it only admonishes the master to be fair with his slaves.

Yet, slavery as a legal status was over in the Western world before the end of the 19th century, even the serfs in benighted Russia & the formerly African slaves in the Old American South and Brazil plantations. Why was it continued in parts of Africa to the present day?

You give far too simplistic an analysis of this situation, griffon007. You ignore the fact that many of the abolitionists in Britain in the 18th century and the U.S. in the 19th century were such because of their own deeply held Christian beliefs (q.v. Berea College). Not only was there *never* an abolitionist movement in the Islamic world, but, as a matter of fact, there have been a number of religious apologists for such, including some within fairly recent times. Yes, of course, there were those who used Christianity to defend slavery ("the mark of Ham" and such), but they've been noticeably silent for many, many years.

Don't you find this just a bit curious?

^Felix, I agree that slavery is reprehensible, no matter what the religion or ideology of the slavers.

And, however simplistic it may be, the foundation documents of both Christianity and Islam do not prohibit the practice.

My point was/is that it is not the religion, ideology, or system of belief which creates the slaver: it is a dark heart. And, if you just look around a bit, you can find all manner of evil committed by folks professing just about any religion you can imagine.

Good comments, though, and certainly valid.

Slavery was invented and carried out solely by white americans. Anyone who has attended a proper american university would know that.

To say that other people commit this horrific act is racist. Whites are to blame for all problems, anyone who says otherwise is a bigot.

LOL @ herzog. It existed way before that. Nice sarcasm though.

Slavery of today isn't only an Islamic tradition. It exists everywhere where you have poverty. It's always wrong but as usually the Western nations will do nothing about it because they can get nothing out of it. If there was as much oil in Sudan as there was in Iraq then you'd have a different story.
