NOTE when I said rest of world equals 500 billion this was without the U.S.A.
I made this ballot because I wanted to see what people think about the United States military spending almost equaling the rest of the worlds.

its absurd. the entire world should put what would come to about a $1 trillion to humanitarian uses. yeah, i know, i'm a real polyana.

Thats right.. we got the bombs baby! Bring it.

The US military can either spend more or die more. I prefer the course we've chosen. Not to say that all that money is spent on appropriate things, or that we shouldn't restructure and reprioritize our military budget, but spending money to ensure we have the best military on the planet is a worthwhile expense.

I think heinlein said that 'the most expensive thing in the world is a 2nd rate military, good, but not good enough to win'.

How can you justify such massive military spending? Who are you scared of?
by DingleDUNG on Wed Aug 10, 05 6:21am [+]

Given our history of constantly being attacked or dragged into wars by our foreign 'allies' our military expenses are fully justified. Even ignoring the threat of terrorism it'd be worth it given the weakness of our allies, and the absolute hatred shown by our enemies.

Like I said, we can eitehr bleed more or spend more, surely you wouldn't object to spending money to save lives?

"Dragged into wars..."!!!!

Priceless !!

Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single occasion in the last 50 years when the US has needed persuading to involve itself in bloodshed.

Terrorism? Fat lot of good aircraft carriers and ICMBs are against terrorism. Next !!

Weakness of allies? That is one of the most ludicrous things I've ever heard... US military spending is greater than that of the next 17 nations combined, 15 of which are your allies.

It takes a lot of our tax dollars to protect the chickenhawk's right to surf the Internet and eat junk food.

Ok folks, I had to set the truth straight. Guess where the US ranks as a percentage of GDP spending on military? Tune in to my quiz coming right up!

Would everyone still want to hurt us if we spent that much taking care of the environment and helping all the poor people in the world?
Well probably, yeah, that's how men work! So bombs away, wow I'm so proud!!!

If you dont have enemies, you dont need a huge military... you reap what you sow in the end.
by Steelhamster on Wed Aug 10, 05 11:11am [+]

^If you have the strongest nation on earth as an ally (think Canada, some of Europe, etc.) you also don't have to spend all that much on military.
by CletuSlackedJawYokel on Wed Aug 10, 05 11:28am [+]

All that money to pepare for War ...

I guess you get what you pay for.
by Cathexis on Wed Aug 10, 05 11:29am [+]

I forgot to add that the 466 billion is only about 3% of our GDP. It is easily afforded.
by USRocks on Wed Aug 10, 05 5:25pm [+]

I don't like it because we're spending all this money on gizmos with all the bells and whistles. I agree with what you say, herzog, especially the part about not all of the money being spent in appropriate ways. Smart nukes are real nice to have, but I'd rather have body armor for the troops on the ground and their Humvees. I don't know if you've ever been invited to a picnic to raise money for body armor. I have, and it's a scary thing to have to contemplate.
by Truthseeker013 on Wed Aug 10, 05 6:26pm [+]

Would the Right be so bright eyed if the 3% of GDP was spent on health and welfare?
