WHO SHOULD WIN THE 2005 NL CY YOUNG AWARD?

[+] ballot by xxxxxxxx

One can put up a good argument for Chris Carpenter, Roger Clemens, and Dontrelle Willis. Carpenter has won 17 games already, Willis has won 15 games with a 2.2 ERA, and Clemens has only won 11 but has a 1.53 ERA.

My pick is Clemens -- he only has 11 wins, but the lack of run support in his games isn't his fault and shouldn't be held against him in voting. A 1.53 ERA is INSANE. If he played on a team with a dominant lineup like the Cardinals or Yankees or Rangers, he might have 20 wins already.

Your pick?

Chris Carpenter 15
Roger Clemens 10
Dontrelle Willis 2

COMMENTS:
If I could sign any of these pitchers on my team for a 1 year contract, I'd take Clemens hands down. I agree that he gets no run support and his era is excellent. This guy never ages.

ERA is a better indicator for a Cy Young award. If you give it for wins, then you're factoring in all the hitters and not just the pitcher.

Exactly. Not to mention that a pitcher with an ERA of over 4.00 could win 20 games on a hard-hitting club like the Yankees or Cardinals -- that's no knock to the pitcher, but at the same time a pitcher who has an ERA of 1.53 like Clemens shouldn't be punished out of the Cy Young Award because his teammates can't hit. His ERA is 1.53 -- 1.53! That's like dead-ball-era good right there.

I'd swing behind Clemens more if I actually LIKED him. Count me for Willis.
