What a silly question. No one has said they are inferior, or that they choose to be poor.
They choose to do nothing in the face of a category 5 hurricane, but that has nothing to do with poverty. Unless a complete lack of common sense is linked to a lack of money.

No absolutely not.
What is really troublesome is the people who are only trying to lay political blame, and usually at the feet of Bush.
Bush's admin has not been anywhere near where it should be on this relief effort, and because the people are black it does beg the question of whether or not it is race-based.
But then one might ask why the Democratic Governor didn't call up LA National Guard.
Why the Democratic controlled state of Louisiana (since Reconstruction democrats have run it) never put in place a contigency for the poor, disabled, sick, old etc.
One might also ask why the BLACK AND DEMOCRATIC mayor of NO didn't do anything to provide for 1) supplies at the place where he told the people to go
2) why didn't THE MAYOR OF NO do anything prior to this to put in place a plan of evacuation for the city's less capaable?
This mayor is not the first Black mayor but the third in a row that has been black going back well over a decade.
Are these three BLACK MAYORS RACISTS?

First, all of them didn't have a choice. Many of the New Orleans poor are so impoverished that that they have no transportation, and if they did, where would they go?
So, the "it's their fault" argument is absurd and leads us away from having to face the reality that is New Orleans.
Even the people who had means and transportation were not particularly irrational: The weather service has cried "wolf" in hurricane-casting countless times in the past, and most of the folks in "hurricane alley" have come to see their forecasts as inaccurate in predicting direction, landfall and intensity. No one seems to be holding the weather service accountable for so many past false hurricane forecasts in the past, although they were a factor in many of the decisions about leaving New Orleans.
And what about the idiots who politicized the dike issue? How about holding the numerous administrations who failed to strengthen the dikes and raise them?

Surely if a mandatory evacuation was ordered then the local government should have taken steps to ensure that ALL citizens had a chance to get out of the city, they are providing transport out now after the event so why the hell didn't they offer it before??? How are people suppost to leave without transport, you cant blame the victims for the incompetance of the local government.
Minni, that's it exactly. The local government did nothing to help anyone. They let thousands of buses sit idle while the waters rose.
I agree minni, the local goverments were responsible for the evacuation before the storm, they did not even move the people in nursing homes and the homes for Mentally Challenged , those people are the responsibility of the state and local goverments in normal time, it's gross incompetence

I can't believe some of the comments on this ballot. The scenarios that played out in New Orleans has been "wargamed" before. Obviously it was not followed through or they didn't realize the problems that would occur.
I tried to address in a ballot of mine. A major terrorist attack would cause even larger strains. A failure to resolve these problems will only result in more deaths.
There MUST be plans for getting everyone out of a city, to safety or to appropriate medical care. All of this needs to be able to be done at the drop of a hat. Imagine for a momment the detonation of a radiological bomb. Plans must be in place that work in that situation for everyone. Obviously the same needs to be for a major hurricane. These are all the responsibility of Homeland Security and FEMA.
To answer Herzog. Most people couldn't do anything even if they wanted to. Those who couldn't get out were sent to the superdome - which they did. That was not a sufficient response and neither was the follow-through.
Once again, I will point out that dealing with major terrorist attack/disaster is what FEMA is supposed to do. It is not up to the mayor or governor to do this alone. To anyone with a brain, it should be obvious that in such a disaster/terrorist attack that the more massive capabilities of the Federal government are what is needed. The responsibility ultimately lays with FEMA and Homeland Security (of which FEMA is a part).
The initial evacuation was the local gov job, that also means asking the federal gov for help if they could not do on their own, "did they do that?" If they did and fema didn't send help, we can go back to blaming the feds, but after the storm, I believe something should have been in place by fema to get help to those people faster. Just my opinion
I also heard that the states did not ask for national guard until the situation got very bad, Is that true? I don't know, just saying what I heard , and what about the levy, I heard Army Corps of Engineers have said it needed to be strengthened for years and the politicians have yearly cut their budgets.
Everyone knew this was just a disaster waiting to happen, and I think everyone crossed their fingers storm after storm, hoping it would hold.
Either way, something went terribly wrong, hope we learn from our mistake.

Some of the insecure weinie righties desperately need to feel superior, so of course they view people with more problems than they have as "inferior." It makes them feel all warm and fuzzy and helps to take their minds off of their inadequacies (and lack of decent sex).
And what city has "thousands" of buses just sitting there waiting to be used to ferry refugees out of the city? For that matter, what city has thousands of buses? And how many drivers would you get, willing to ferry people "as the waters rose?"
And even if they did, wouldn't using city resources that way be what the Cheeto-eaters consider socialism?

Lousiana is one of the poorest states along with west Virginia.
There was no way that they could have dealt with this magnitude of the disaster.

Louisiana's state income is in the middle of the pack.
Mississippi, Alabama, and New Mexico are all much poorer.
If it is a case of how poor some are then why did the much poorer states of Alabama and Mississippi deal with the same hurricane much better?
Myback, and crank, did you see the photo of a bus yard in new orleans, filled with buses, now flooded and useless because the government refused to use them?
Crank, you'll find any excuses to defend the actions, or inactions, of a democrat. Fact is those buses were sitting idle, and unless they were just collecting buses for some odd reason they had drivers for them, not that you can't just grab anyone who knows how to use a car and have them do it. The mayor of new orleans failed, miserably. But you will never admit that because he is a black democrat.
