SHOULD ELECTION DAY BE A NATIONAL HOLIDAY, AND EVERYBODY BE REQUIRED TO VOTE?

[+] ballot by LCD
created Fri Dec 12, 03
Election day should be a national holiday. Everybody should be required to vote. Americans voting rate is the lowest in the world. There are people in Africa, without cars, travel hundreds of miles and stand in line for days for the opportunity to vote. We should do everything to get our voting rate close to 100%

COMMENTS:
that's a good point kermitt, perhaps they should spend some $$ on education before mandating everyone to vote...

Maybe if they had internet voting. Who wants to go down to some crowded community center with a bunch of old smelly local yocals, and grimey voting boothes. Not to mention there are some who would rather not be put on jury duty lists. If this was really a free nation then the government shouldn't make anyone do anything including pay income taxes.

Rather than make voting mandatory, perhaps the various political parties should try finding candidates worth voting for. Might provide some incentive, eh? :-)

I think people should be required to at least show up at the polls (or if it could be done reliably by computer). They can cast a "none" ballot if they want. Living in the US is a tremendous priviledge. The importance of maintaining a representative Democracy supercedes the importance of a free election process that allows a 50% voting rate. The more distant from our government we become, the more it becomes like the British monarchy we broke away from in the first place.
