I really don't think that it does. There most certainly is no intelligent life outside Earth. If there was, they would have contacted us by now.
by nuckinfutz on Mon Sep 26, 05 5:48pm [+]

Even if they WEREN'T trying to contact us specifically, we should have been able to intercept something by now.
by nuckinfutz on Mon Sep 26, 05 5:50pm [+]

Given the vast expanse of the universe, it would take many years for any signal to reach us and even then it would be centuries out of date.
by Steelhamster on Mon Sep 26, 05 5:59pm [+]

Absolutely.

We do need to remember that aliens are not necessarily extraterrestrial in origin, and extraterrestrials are not necessarily alien. This is the proximate difference between George Bush and E.T.

Indeed, even at the speed of light, it would take millions of years to receive messages from some planets. We have detected literally billions of stars. And many of them have orbiting planets (or at least the ones near enough to detect do - there is no reason to suggest the further away ones don't support planets). If this planet is unique, let's hope it's not in terms of supporting life but in terms of destroying it.
by keithsheen on Mon Sep 26, 05 6:17pm [+]

Many of the stars we see in the night sky are in fact no longer there, the light we see is millions of years old.
by Steelhamster on Mon Sep 26, 05 6:21pm [+]

Plus we can only detect messages of a very limited nature, similar to those we have discovered how to broadcast into space. There are surely zillions of other ways to send messages. May I suggest an analogy??? Let's say the telegram had been invented in 1600 in France. The King of France might have said 'send telegrams to North, East, West and South'. If, within a year, he had received no telegrams back from unknown civilisations, would it be correct for him to assume that every civilisation and community in the world had already been discovered?
by keithsheen on Mon Sep 26, 05 6:24pm [+]

An alternative argument as to why 'alien' civilisations have not contacted us is this: we're a bunch of self-destructive, violent, unpleasant arseholes, on the whole..... or at least most of the powerful people are.
by keithsheen on Mon Sep 26, 05 6:28pm [+]

Some arseholes are bigger than otherslol

Yes. Under the sea.

Nuck, I disagree. Aliens are more likely to go where there's intelligent life. But, let's say for example that they have, then the only logical conclusion is that our governments know about it and are covering it up. Like Roswell, the government changed it's story so many times. Moreover, from what I've heard on the internet, back during Roswell, the US government made a deal with the aliens, you know the green eyed men, in exchange for genetic material, the aliens would give the AMericans alien technology to use against the Russians in order to protect democracy from being taken over by the communists. HOwever, there is evidence to suggest that the Russians themselves may have also be using alien technology. Excuse me, it's time for my meds now.

It is statistically improbable that there is no life out there. Even conservative estimates indicate that the universe should be teeming with life.

As for the "well they didn't contact us therefore they don't exist" argument.... Just ridiculous. The sheer scale of the universe makes it unlikely that we will ever meet what life is out there.
by wideheadofknowledge on Mon Sep 26, 05 10:31pm [+]

There has to be be other life outside the earth. Why would we be the only life in the universe? Really it doens't make sense, I'm gonna have a beer.
by um__yeah on Mon Sep 26, 05 11:56pm [+]

There are around a hundred billion galaxies each containing an average of a hundred billion stars. Of course there is.
by Narcissus on Tue Sep 27, 05 5:18am [+]

Taking into acocunt the enormous number of star systems, it seems mathematically certain that there must exist many other planets that can support life as we know it (and even mor ethat may support life as we don't know it).

Taking 'life' as a set of biochemical processes, it is highly probable that, given the right conditions, Life (of some sort) would arise.

Given Life of some sort and the tireless forces of Evolution, it seems highly likely that some form of Intelligence exists.

Let's hope they have more Wisdom.

Bacteria where found alive in the moon... It turned out that that were earth contamination by a previous mission, but hey, those tiny guys were still alive... isn't it extraterrestial life?
by xaman on Tue Sep 27, 05 11:33am [+]

Yes, and Michael Jackson is proof.
