LEFT-WINGERS: DO YOU THINK THAT "LIBERAL" IS KIND OF A BAD TERM FOR US IN THE BROAD SCHEME OF THINGS?

The reason I ask this is because "liberal" often means to imply that we don't mind spending others' money frivolously, and that simply isn't true. It seems that left-wingers are, by pure definition, 'liberal' on some issues and 'conservative' on others (same with right-wingers, but usually the opposite stances). It seems as if "progressive" would be the more accurate term for us. Do you agree?

Yes -- we're not truly "liberal", we're "progressive" 4
liberal = progressive 4
No 3
liberal = socialist 2
No -- the meaning of "liberal" has changed. 0

COMMENTS:
No.

The real problem that I have had with Democrats and "liberals" is that they run from this term like the plague instead of standing up for it.

Liberals, brought the country: Social Security, Civil Rights, Medicare/aid, etc. Lots of positive things that have helped many.

hehe - right wing facists propagandists (is that a word?) are trying to make liberal a bad word - trying to clump all sorts of people with varying views and degrees of view under one label and present them as fools. If being a liberal means i have compassion, i can reason things out for myself, i don't want my world poisoned and destroyed, what i do in my bedroom is no one else's business, people deserve decent affordable healthcare, and i have a right to consume whatever i want to - then i'm proud to be a liberal. and if they think being a liberal means i'm a wacko tree hugging lazy whiny bum - that's their problem - i know better.

bill o'reilly sneers everytime he says liberal but that doesn't mean it is bad or has any new connotations...unless one buys their twist on the definition.
liberal doen't mean one who freely spends other's money--that's only what the right wing talking points says over and over and over.
still ain't true.
look who's been tossing our money around now for a while, or should i say pissing it all away.

liberals are left wing but left wingers arnt liberal ...... liberal is a goo(ish) term to describe those of the centre left but other than that its a pretty good term. The main reason i dont like the term liberal however is (to me at least) it implys that you dont take a stand on anything ect ect. Besides liberal can mean diferent things to different people in the Uk for instance Lib Dems are the centreist party with both right and left wing policies. I myself am not what i would call a liberal
by Liverero on Mon Oct 03, 05 3:20pm [+]

I'm certainly left wing, but I wouldn't describe myself as a liberal as such. Like Liverero said the Lid dems in the UK were traditionally the centre party whereas I am far more 'Old' Labour.

I believe it's disingenuous for leftists to call themselves liberal.

I go strickly by what the Dictionary says, for everything, no spinning.
One day I woke up feeling kind of blank and looked up 'liberal' and 'conservative' so EUREKA

Liberals have worked harder to make America a better country than Conservatives. Not a little but 10X more. Liberals did it alone while a media of conservative politics looked down on them, kicked them down, and called the "Marxist Rebels". That didn't stop our progress. And with the hard labour the liberals have given, we have one of the most if not the most economically stable country. Along with the good economy we gave America fine human rights laws and then some. If it weren't for the progress of liberals, America would still be a slave nation. So, yes, we the liberals are progressive.
