Cheap gas prices are in the interest of the Society (and supposedly Government). High gas porices are in the interest of private oil companies. The issue is just one of increased demand especially from China, and several supply issues (Venezuela and Nigeria) amongst others, as well as the fact that America hasn't built a new refinery in over 20 years.
