It is important for banks to make their clients feel confortable. That's why the clerks, for example, have such a suave and familiar approach. A metal detector would ruin that scenario. It also wouldnt be very effective because the bloody thing would be blaring all the time and if some blokes were carrying guns they could draw them quickly and still hold-up the place.
Some banks and Post Offices in the Bronx require you do.
It doesn't send the right message. And besides you would need an attendant and that would cost money.
Because if you think about it many people would be coming in with a big sack of coins (deposits) from vending machines or some such.
And people don't want airport security everywhere. Airports are bad enough.
Well, what is worse? A little inconvenience or being in the bank when it is robbed?

seamus, I've seen metal detectors that look like potted plant stands. (One of my sisters works for BoA.) Comfort levels would be served easily.
^But that doesn't solve anything. Unless there is some further mechanism to prevent or stop a robbery it doesn't matter at all. The detector won't differentiate between a sack of pennies and a gun.
And so the detector can go off, the clerk could press the button, the cops could respond and arrest granny with her change purse.
