Another note: my doctor thinks they are scum-bags - that was his word. Why don't doctors unite and drive these people out of business? Why should pencil-pushing bureaucrats dictate who gets what treatment? I think this is just another example of a world that is through the looking-glass.

You're absolutely right, Mojo, it is illegal to deny health insurance on the basis of depression. I think you should challenge it.
Mojo, you definitely need to shop around. You should absolutely be able to get insurance for less that that (by half) and get much more coverage. Try Blue Cross. Also apply several times. When I first bought my insurance I was denied by Blue Cross but then went to a different agent and was accepted. I don't know the details of how it all works but there is some advantage to shopping around.
All they care about is making money, they couldn't care less about people

It's definately a racket. The moment you need them, they turn tail with your premium payment.
Did you catch the latest trick our politicians are playing with healthcare? The Republicans are introducing a bill that will "streamline" and "modernize" the emergency room care. When you blow away all of the smoke, it is actually an attempt to reduce emergency care for indigent patients. And yes, Mojo, these are the greatest scumbags in America right now. They have defeated the will of the people through bribes (lobbying and contributions), and they grow more arrogant by the hour. Who knows where it's going, but we can hope it gets blown apart one day soon.
griffon you are by far one of the most cynical people I have come across. mojo, you can get decent healthcare for less than you are paying now. be optimistic,
^Inter: Perhaps I am cynical. But there is so much evidence of the healthcare/prescription drug industry working their will against the best interests of most Americans that it has become difficult to tell what is cynical and what is realism. Honestly, the healthcare/prescription drug industry in America has become a metaphor, in my opinion, for all that's wrong with our political process.
Yes, they can be hell to work with
More like a plague of scum on the Earth. i_r, please send a list. I'm in the same boat as mojo.
I can't send a list because undoubtedly my physical health is different from yours or mojo. I am not defending insurance agents by the way. I had to shop around. blue Cross and Kaiser both refused at first, but then both later accepted me.
I have a solution Mojo, but it quite drastic... but think about it. Marry me, become a British citizen and never have to worry about your health care ever again... better still marry a Finn, they have an even better system. This offer is open for only 10 minutes.....
You could just come to Canada. At least some of your health costs will be subsized.

If the quality of healthcare, not the price, in Britain or Canada was so great how come so many people come here for treatment? Especially if they can afford it?
It is like the government saying that everyone has a car. but you can only use it according to some schedule that they set.
My dad went to England for a procedure on his eyes that is not yet done in the U.S. Fixed the problem beautifully. Lots of cutting-edge healthcare in Europe. Besides, isn't it better to have access to healthcare than to be shut out because you have no money?

I won't argue that Euros have cutting edge medicine. Who is getting left out here? I know that some of the preventive stuff lacks, but too bad. I have a froggy friend that is a janitor in a school in Canadia and he broke his wrist on the job. he went to the doctor and was told to come back in 6 months when they broke and reset his wrist. He only had to wait 6 months. My dad, who didn't have insurance was hit by a car and broke both of his legs. He was given extensive medical care. And it really is funny that people think it is free. Nothing is free.
