COMMENTS:
Funny I was thinking that when Meirs pulled her name from consideration. O'Connor said she wanted to retire to care for her ailing husband. It seems like every moment the politicians dither she loses time with her husband. But she did say that she would wait until her replacement was confirmed before she left the bench. And she was confirmed after Bork so she nows that the process can be very long.
It seems to me like she could retire any moment she wished. And, she should have chosen to retire sooner to be with her sick husband.
Ooops! IMO.
inter_regnum, I thought the Bork saga happened in 1986 and O'Connor was confirmed in 1981.
Seems like she could get frustrated. First her replacement was switched and that wasn't necessary. Bush could have still appointed him to her position and left a vacancy couldn't he? (and that wasn't really fair to all those people who sat on the court, so much for meritocracy and servcie huh?) Maybe Bush was worried about the possibility that there would be a 4 to four tie. And of course she could jsut quit anytime she wants.
CT you are right. But what I meant was that she is aware that the process could take a long time.
Very true.
