IF WE'RE GOING TO USE THE DEATH PENALTY, SHOULD WE DO IT IN PUBLIC?

It doesn't seem to be much of a deterrent, and the reason why is because it isn't used that often, and it's basically done in secret, with only a few people seeing the executions. Perhaps if it were done in public it could serve as a deterrent, the gruesomeness of it all serving as a reminder that if you kill you'll suffer the same fate. Personally, I waver on the death penalty, but I think that if we're going to use it we'd better use it in a way that would actually serve as a deterrent. Your thoughts?

COMMENTS:
That might work.
But then again people like my neighbors could care less about life or death.
I would just put them all to work doing labor with no pay.

I dont really think it needs to be public. I think it would just anger and desensitize those who would have the dispostion to commit violent crimes in the future. But then it could do the opposite. I kind of doubt it though.

When it was done in public, did it make a difference, people used to pack picnics baskets and go watch executions, did it make a difference? I don't know

I mean was that a deterrent when it WAS done in public?
by larrynelmira on Wed Dec 14, 05 12:53am [+]

No. Capital punishment is barbaric enough without making it a spectacle.

Also, the real reasons it is used have little to do with deterrence -- that is just a more socially acceptable argument.

Yes. Public punishments have a greater effect than private ones.

We ought to bring back public canings, those work well in singapore.

Iran does that, I suppose it would bode well for an enlightened westernized society
by aya on Wed Dec 14, 05 6:50am [+]

Aya: in iran they do it without a real trial and for trivial reasons.

Someone says your an infidel? Good enough, beat him to death. A woman who got pregnant by rape out of wedlock, but her attacker says it was voluntary, good enough, she's a whore stone her to death.

It's not the punishment that is good or bad, it's how it's carried out and for what reasons.

Iran also arrests people, and gives out fines, are those barbaric as well?
by herzog on Wed Dec 14, 05 6:59am [+]

Sure. It's a barbaric practice anyway, so if it became a public spectacle more people might take action to abolish it.
by xxxxxxxx on Wed Dec 14, 05 9:27am [+]

...Abolish it by refusing to break the law
