[+] ballot by xxxxxxxx ACTIVE Mar 03,2006 - Wed Nov 26, 08 Here's my rationale: Andruw Jones is playing for the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic. Jones was born and raised in Curacao, an island which is part of the Dutch empire even though it's in the southern part of the Caribbean Sea. However, Puerto Rico is a part of the US, but it's counted as its own country in the WBC. In theory, if a Puerto Rican wanted to play for the US, he should have the right. Now I know that the quality of talent is substantially different here -- barring a miracle that would put the 1980 US Olympic hockey team to shame, the Netherlands won't escape the first round, even with Jones; the US, however, has as good of a chance as any team (if not better) to win the entire tournament, even without the help of Puerto Rico. That said, for the sake of the argument, this is a moot point. Why shouldn't Puerto Rico be counted as part of the US in international competition if other countries' holdings are counted as part of the respective country?
