Before I come off as anti-American, allow me to explain what I mean.

See, the US won one game in the second round and lost two.

The game they won was against Japan, and it was by one run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Two innings earlier, Japan had a run taken away because the umpire ruled that the runner on third base left the bag before the ball was caught, even though TV replays proved that call to be wrong. It was a flat-out dumb call by the umpires -- not only did the runner leave the bag after the out, but it was also impossible to discern by the naked eye, which means that you have to give the baserunner the benefit of the doubt. Since the United States won by one run, that incident was huge.

However, Japan ended up advancing to the final round instead of the US due to the US' loss to Mexico tonight, which had an umpiring incident of its own.

In the third inning, a batter hit a long fly ball which ended up hitting the right-field foul pole, a good ten feet above the right-field wall. When the ball hits the pole, it's ruled a home run. It was clear that the ball hit the pole -- not the wall, not a fan, but the pole, especially by the way it bounced back into the field. The umpires ruled that it bounced off the wall (which as I mentioned was ten feet lower than the spot which it hit) and ruled that it was a double. The runner did eventually score, though, luckily making the umpiring mistake a moot point, and Mexico ended up winning the game by one run.

Is this karmic justice, everything evening out at the end?

No -- purely coincidental. 6
