It's obvious to anyone who has studied politics that the composition of the Democratic and Republican parties dramatically changed in the 1960s and 1970s.

The Democratic Party basically used to have two wings -- the progressive wing which New England is famous for, and the conservative wing which the Deep South was famous for. In the 1950s and 1960s, though, civil rights legislation was mainly supported by progressive Democrats, driving the Southern ones who were against civil rights legislation (Strom Thurmond) to the Republican Party, the party which was much more conservative then the progressive Democrats and could accept racism.

This was 40 years ago. Republicans, though, love to bring this up as evidence that today's Democrats are racist (probably to cover up their own discriminative tendencies). Besides, look at how they talk about Robert Byrd as a Klan member from 60 years ago, when that was common, but then love to pretend the famous Trent Lott episode never happened. How convenient.

I really hate the Republican Party. I truly see no redeeming qualities in being a Republican or voting for one, and anyone who does should be loudly condemned.

Why do Republicans point to stuff that Democrats did from the 1940s-1960s in an attempt to prove that Dems are racist?
