they are aiming their blame a little too low.
by LCD on Thu Apr 13, 06 9:19pm [+]

I dont know LCD. I've always had the impression that Bush isnt the one really in charge.

As for the ballot, like I've said before, if we'd let our generals fight the wars instead of the politicians, we probably wouldnt be in the mess we are right now.
by Grumpy_Person on Thu Apr 13, 06 10:48pm [+]

I'm sure the generals know far more about what's going on (in both the battlefield and the White House) than we can ever dream of.

Rumsfeld - he is evil incarnate.

They should be calling for his execution for treason and war crimes.

Hmmm let's see ... how many retired generals are still alive ...?

Over by one, and still six too many for Rummy to get the point. yes, I know he's in charge of Defense, and he's got to set the policy, but he's *also* supposed to have the good sense to defer to those with actual strategic and combat experience. Eric Shinseki, a recently retired four-star Army general who was Chief of Staff for the Army and a potential candidate for Joint Chiefs Chairman, shot himself in the foot when he criticized Rumsfeld's and Bush's handling of Iraq. Not only did he lose the Joint Chiefs position but, when he retired, the White House snubbed him by not sending a representative to his retirement ceremony, the first time in the history of a four-star officer retirement that this happened.

How many retired generals are there?

Over 4700 according to the DoD website.
by Ignatius_J_Reilly on Sat Apr 15, 06 10:18pm [+]

This ballot is now outdated. Gen. Wesley Clark has called for resignation of Donald Rumsfeld, thus becoming the 7th general to do so.
by xxxxxxxx on Sat Apr 15, 06 11:44pm [+]

Yes, and now other Generals are stepping forward to support and defend Rumsfeld, and criticise those retired Generals.
by Jinn_the_Kafir on Mon Apr 17, 06 12:24pm [+]

They are retired Lt. Gen. John Crosby, former deputy commanding general of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command; retired Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney, former assistant vice chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force; retired Maj. Gen. Buron Moore, U.S. Air Force, who was director of Central Command during Operation Desert Storm; and retired Maj. Gen Paul Vallely, former deputy commander of the U.S. Army, Pacific.

They said: "We do not believe that it is appropriate for active duty, or retired, senior military officers to publicly criticize U.S. civilian leadership during war," and called the Rumsfeld critics feelings "irrelevant".

"Two of the retired generals (Messrs. Zinni and Newbold) do not understand the true nature of this radical ideology, Islamic extremism, and why we fight in Iraq. We suggest they listen to the tapes of United 93. So let's all breathe into a bag and get on with winning the global war against radical Islam."

Knock yourself out.
by Liberal_Democrat on Mon Apr 17, 06 9:14pm [+]

I was being sarcastic. Saying its 7 against 4 is silly, and not valid gounds for stating one opinion is correct over another. Perhaps if a hundred retired generals spoke publicly against Rumsfeld their points may appear more credible, but the real point being made is that these 7 Generals don't speak for all Americans nor military personnel which is what they intended as the perception. It didn't work.

Besides, disagreements among commanders regarding military tactics are nothing new. Even Hitler's commanders debated, as did those of the Allies.

Further more, those 7 Generals never stated Iraq should not have been invaded. They just have different ideas on the strategy. Their entitled to that.
by Jinn_the_Kafir on Mon Apr 17, 06 9:46pm [+]

I don't know about those others but General Wesley Clark is opposed to the war. It's a shame he didn't get nominated as the Democratic nominee for president in '04. The Democrats would've won for sure. Big mistake putting John "Flip Flop, Attack Irrelevant Issues" Kerry.
by Liberal_Democrat on Tue Apr 18, 06 1:57pm [+]

Yes, I actually like General Wesley Clark too. I like the way he speaks. I think he is very intelligent, and he comes across as being sincere with his thought and opinions. Indeed, I believe he would make a great president.
