My older brother smokes. His wife makes him smoke outside, even in the dead of winter. He flicks his butts into the snow of the yard. His says "this puts them out safely, and they disappear under the snow".

Then spring comes! His wife brings him the rake immediately and before you know it my brothers stuck doing ALL the yard work for the whole spring, summer and fall! What a sucker fool! lol!

I am a smoker, and admit i "toss" a butt once in awhile. But I do make an effort to pick them up on occasion. It does look very tacky otherwise.

I walked by a worn down old house a few days ago with a tiny front lawn that was covered in cigarette butts. There must have been over a hundred.
