COMMENTS:
You don't have to be in the army to be a patriot. That would mean that we only have 3 million patriots in the US.
Right off the top of my head I am reminded of: Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin, George Mason, Abraham Lincoln, ... and on and on. True patriotism is a matter of the heart.
No. This country (as are most countries) is made up of people who support and serve their country patriotically in more ways than just serving in the military.
It’s much more patriotic to just let the worthless poor die for valuable oil. Enriching the nations elite is the most patriotic act you can commit.
Yes you can still be a patriot without serving in the military.A patriot is a person who advances the progress of his nations ideals, culture and interests. So you can be an artist who paints art about your nation and thus you are a patriot.cranky in your opinion was Bill Clinton not a patriot because he did not serve in the military?
If patriotism is not a matter of actually risking your life to serve your country, might we refer to George W. Bush as a patriot? Hmmmmmmm? Not.
So not going to war for your country to me means you're a fucking coward. And that's directed to all the pro war bush chicken shits.

Not by my mile marker.
You dont need to be an officer to ba a patriot there are numerous other ways to serve your country.
There are some excellent comments already by griffon007, grumpy_person, corrupt and others. You don't have to serve to be a patriot. What if you don't serve, but develop a weapon or protective armor that helps your country win the war? Are you not a patriot?
Looking at the true meaning of patriotism (versus Nationalism), yes. Unfortunately, we have a deficit of true patriots, as too many beat the drums for unneeded and unconstructive war, even as they cheer the dismantling of our Constitution and government, by internal enemies.
I don't think you have to serve in military to be a patriot.
^As fiddle said, there are other things you can do.
