"The term destroyed is used to describe any oil platform that sustained $25,000,000 or more in damages." I didn't even know that they were worth that much. Imagine how much oil polluted the gulf after that disaster.
^Surprisingly only about 4000 barrels. Since the disaster of Santa Barbara in 1969 and the blowing of a North Sea platform, all wells are required to have an emergency shutoff valve under the seabed in the pipeline itself. All of them worked. The worst spill was under the Mississippi River, where more than half of the total spilled occurred.
