SHOULD RUSSIA SELL SIBERIA TO CHINA?

[+] ballot by texsue57

China has shown interest in buying a large part of the Russian far-east territories since the early 1990s to relieve pressure from its increasingly populated territory.

Russians are generally opposed to the idea, but as the provinces in Siberia become more and more costly to maintain, some are admitting it might be a good deal.

Russia has hinted that it would want around $3,000,000,000,000 to $4,000,000,000,000 for the territory and the retention of the mineral rights there.

So should Russia sell Siberia?

COMMENTS:
It would be a good stimulation of the Russian Economy I guess. If they keep mineral rights it's even better.

No way in East Hell. We need to keep the Chinese contained, IMO.

No, it will be hard to keep the mineral rights with a hundred million Chinese there.

On the surface it seems like a good idea. But I imagine the Russians enjoy all that empty space between beijing and moscow. The russian high command has always been afraid of a war with china and rightfully so. Letting the red chinese build bases thousands of miles closer to russias heartland will certainly be a concern in any such trade.

As big of an incentive as 3 trillion dollars may be, the threat posed by 1.3 billion chinese may prove to be a greater disincentive.

Siberia is full of natural resources, so of course China would like it. They have stated their desire to buy it? Well that's an improvement I guess, considering their previous stance was comprised of threats to invade disputed Siberian territories.

Russia should make it clear to China that it cannot take land through business or military means. And Russia should continue to tell Beijing that it will not allow a Chinese invasion of Mongolia. China had threatened this in the past I ahve read, and MOscow strongly opposed as it wanted to keep China's influence away from Russian borders as much as possible. The very fact that Mongolia still exists today, is because Russia perceived it as a buffer state.

It is in Russia's strategic interest to keep Chinese forces from expanding.

Although I don't see them having a lot of choice. China's power is reaching levels it hasn't seen in over a millenium. If they want it, they're going to take it.

And I think that we in the west would have to seriously think twice about attacking a nuclear power that has the people to take losses we couldn't.

Time to start looking at alternate fuel sources guys!
