I didn't know they did that.
The orgins of the practice date back hundreds of years ago in an effort to prevent infection due to tears in the ears. Back then it was easier to crop ears when the dogs were a few days old than to crop ears of a full sized dog with no pain killers or antiseptic. Same reasons for tail and dew claw docking. It's usually practiced today for purely cosmetic purposes, however it does reduce the chances of ear infection by allowing air circulation in the ear, preventing moisture from building up.
so, crop the ears of cocker spaniels, et c???
Apparently, the Doberman as a breed has, over the years been associated with a certain "appearance." We do this with a lot of other things, not just dogs. Human beings have placed a "value" or "expectation" on the way someone or something is "supposed to" look; regardless of whether or not that look is acheived naturally.
And, I'm going to write a new ballot about that human dynamic.
Voted : No it's not cruel, let me explain why below.
A Doberman is not a Doberman without his/her ears cropped.

Everybodies opinion diffrent , for me the way their beauty shows when ear cropped tail docked. Many will say oh you are cruel !which is nonsense i ama dog lover i care them like my own kids , it is same like we do tatoo piercing or permanent make up all these are very painful even we do no local anestesic!! BUT for what? to look more beautiful or attractive?yes we do and many admire the look we achive ... ofcourse this only could be done under professionals hand yes then not cruel, but now new law people do more illegally for to say we have cropped docked puppies for sale and ask for more money so isn't this more dangerous???many can risk the animals health and they can hide how done as some import or the dog is old stories wise... This is my opinion and i know many breeders doberman lovers share same they are cute with natural ears though , but cropp is not cruel!!!
Voted : Yes it's cruel. I think floppy ears are cute.
It causes the animal a lot of pain. I don't think that it's fair to subject an innocent animal to a human ideal of "vicious guard dog." They are beautiful, loving animals that deserve our protection as much as we deserve theirs.
let me explain i'm from holland the reason they did thath is they where hunting dogs and they where for small and medium wild if the wild (like wild pigs).when they retreve the pray it can be alive and bite in the ears becose they are easy to grab in europe it is not alouwd anny more unles you have a hunter pasport

Don't do it to your dog if you would'nt do it to yourself....
i think dobes look so much better with theyre ears floppy, it just looks so much more cute and family friendly....
I want a mean looking dog...so i'd have it cropped, were buying one someday soon.

It is a couple pieces of skin cut off the ear, and it allows better hearing. It's no different than a man's parents circumcising him.
It is equivalent to men being circumcized at birth. It is for hygenic reasons and even if it does hurt, it is very short and we cannot remember it.

ƒu¢k 'em. The didn't find it cruel when they cropped some parts of me.
Voted : Yes it's cruel. I think floppy ears are cute.

It's cruel, and illegal in most countries throughout Europe
Voted : Yes it's cruel. I think floppy ears are cute.
my dobbie NEVER had its tail or ears cropped. The only harm that came of it was her ability to clear a coffee table with a single wag of the tail.
Voted : No it's not cruel, let me explain why below.
at least i think because they were breed for there ears to be cropped and anywhere they look like beagles when they are not cropped
Voted : No it's not cruel, let me explain why below.
I'm sure the dogs are either put to sleep or given pain meds when it's done
Voted : Other
it isn't really cruel, but they look better without them cropped. in england, it has just been made illegal to crop their tails. and quite frankly, thats ridiculous. my dog's tail was done at about 3 weeks old, before the ban, and he looks brilliant. i wanted another dobe, but they look silly with tails!
THESE PUPPIES ARE SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CUTE
Voted : No it's not cruel, let me explain why below.
cropping allows the doberman to live up to his attentive and acute listening capabilities
yes it is cruel ,if they didn't need a tail they would be born without one. its a human who does this to them
yes its cruel, that is a human for you again,if the ears were meant to be upright they would be born like that, all my dobermans have floppy ears. let them be normal.
