Why is this? Why don't liberals just realize that the 10 commandments are a wonderful set of guidelines, and look past the religious part of it?

COMMENTS:
Some of the ten commandments are great, but others are just nonsense.

Thou shalt not have unicorns before me!

Libreals don't hate the commandments, or morality... we hate all the self-seeking conservative addendums attached to these rules!
by MO_ on Sun May 21, 06 4:39am [+]

It is not that liberals hate the Ten Commandments it is that they want a seperation of church and state and therefore liberals base their morality in secular ethics.
I'm not a liberal but I think it is better that we keep the church and religious doctrines out of our laws because we are likely to end up with laws against adultry and homosexuality.

Jenny, did you ever find your panties? I thought I saw them by the side of the road the other day.

Morality is a system of principles and judgments shared by cultural, religious, secular and philosophical communities who share concepts and beliefs, by which people determine whether given actions are right or wrong.

Most people have some morality or moral values.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Sun May 21, 06 6:28am [+]

^ I would go as far as saying that ALL people have a moral sense. It is inherent to our species; however, and here's the rub, because of a high degree of deviation (or should I have said "deviancy?") within the species, it is next to impossible to agree on much of anything, expecially these days.
by contragrain on Sun May 21, 06 7:03am [+]

^ eXpecially? especially is more like it! ha ha

True morality, Jenny, does not come from obeying rules. It comes from the heart/soul of a person.

If rules and the fear of punishment are what keep you from harming others, than you are a moral infant. The source of this morality (if can indeed call it that) is external to the individual. You behave lawfully from a fear of punishment or the disapproval of others.

True morality has its genesis in an understanding of social mutuality and a genuine interest in the welfare of others. Its source is internal to the person.

This is not to say that rules, like the Ten Commandments are not good things. Rules like these are needed because too many of our fellow human beings are deterred from aggressing against others solely by rules and the disapproval of others.

It is interesting to notice that your ballot response list that you state that "liberals, like most rational people, root their morality in secular (non religious) ethics." This is probably true for some liberals and some conservatives (remember that many conservatives are not Christians. It is also true that many liberals are Christians.
In fact, liberals often point to the example of Christ in taking social positions.

Ultimately, whether you are a moral infant or a moral adult, is not related to your political beliefs.

Liberals do not hate religion -- they do often oppose intolerant religions who threaten the freedom of all people.
by xxxxxxxx on Sun May 21, 06 7:32am [+]

I disagree griffon true morality is not a product of a genuine care for others, most people don't care about strangers.Instead morality is a product of utility and self perservation. The only reason why people want laws and morality is because they want to protect themselves, their love ones and property.
by Corrupt on Sun May 21, 06 8:01am [+]

Ummm... it should be implemented in law that should obey our parents? How geeky?
by xxxxxxxx on Sun May 21, 06 8:01am [+]

of course they are. but who are you, or who am i, to dictate someone's moral code? this is not in any way a political issue jenny ole' gal, its one of personal morals and values. get it?
by Kev24 on Sun May 21, 06 8:07am [+]

oh yeah and by the way, you do know that in the united states, stealing is a crime, as is murder and adultry is grounds for divorce. the others, such as graven images, bearing false witness, etc., are more to do with judeo-christian values. so how do you propose enforcing them on non-jewish and non-christian people? you're trying to somehow intimate that liberals are what?? amoral?? or is it that like your hero, george w. bush, you want a theocracy instead of a "democracy?" see, i just don't get your point. are you sure you do?

Jenny17, I perceive that you consider yourself a "Lover of the Ten Commandments." This perception of mine has endeared my heart to you; whether you believe so, or not.
In an effort to truly communicate with you, I will use one of those to address my point. And I hope and pray you can follow it...although it may be asking too much.

Try considering Commandment #9--

(Exodus 20:16)

"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."

This is the commandment from which we base our laws concerning libel, and slander.

I have recently posted a ballot concerning "Christian Liberals" (and yes, I believe that they exist).

Do you see where I'm going with this, Jenny, my sweet?

It would appear that you've just borne false witness against your neighbor when you stated in the question, "uh oh, liberals hate morality."

Let's see if you can catch the Spirit from which I intend my following biblical quotation. I deliberately will not quote Matthew 7:1; as it has been my experience that many people who use it don't even know where it came from OR what follows; and, many often use it to justify doing the wrong thing. So, I'll just cut to the following verse, as I wouldn't want to be construed as telling YOU what YOU should do, I only speak of natural consequences here.

Matthew 7:2--
"For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you."

In case you are wondering, my references are quoted in NASB translation...
but, KJV (or whatever version you use) probably means the same thing.

Welcome back, jenny. Sad to see that you haven't gotten out to meet people yet.
by Truthseeker013 on Sun May 21, 06 9:39am [+]

oh, BTW Jenny, I think I love the ten commandments a bit more than my own political opinions. One might construe that as meaning that I am trying my best to following Commandment #1.
by contragrain on Sun May 21, 06 9:57am [+]

"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."

contragrain makes a fantastic point. and lets consider one of the ultimate violatsion of this. lets think back to a time in the very near past in which the president of the united states claimed "they have weapons of mass destruction."

gee, did they? talk about bearing false witness.
by Kev24 on Sun May 21, 06 11:51am [+]

Because the 10 commandments are not used as *an* example of a set of guidelines ... they are used as *the* set of guidelines ... and the associated religious associations are part and parcel, with their positioning.

Why do 10 commandment apologists waffle and spin like that, jenny, when their real agenda seems to be to set the US up as a 'Christian nation?'
by Cathexis on Mon May 22, 06 6:54am [+]

Do you suggest imposing criminal penalties for breaking the first commandment? If so, I'm curious what punishment you would recommend.
by blaster on Fri Oct 13, 06 11:54am [+]

The 10 commandments are even easier to follow than the bible.

1. I am the Lord thy God, thou shalt have no other gods before me.

(ok fine, big deal)

2. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

(this one might be a little harder)

3. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them.

(ok so no bowing to buddah, who wants to bend down anyway?)

4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

(ok so we're keeping it holy)

5. Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long.

(we should do this anyway!)

6. Thou shalt not kill.

(this is DEFINATLY not a liberal commandment, lol)

7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.

(don't cheat! Remember it doesn't say you can't marry someone of the same sex, just don't cheat)

8. Thou shalt not steal.

(stealing is wrong in everyones eyes)

9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

(so don't bear false witness, damnit!)

10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's.

(basically don't steal shit and don't do your neighbors ass!)

I think if people went by THIS and not something that was written by man (the bible) this world would be a much safer and nicer place.
