Just a tad bit too enthusiastic. I'm big sports fan and all, I love the competition and all of that but treating the local soccer team's capitain like a God is over doing it. Speaking of enthusiasm. I remember in the 1970s or 80s there was a man in a Latin American country who jumped out of a window from excitement when his nation's team scored a point. I can't remember the nation, I can't remember the year, the event but I remember it happened. He jumped out of the window and died later on.
'americans should join in on the violence' Hahaha, priceless!
"But we also don't riot, assualt police and each, and burn cars over soccer matches either." Yeah! We save that for basketball games!
I have never rioted or been in a fight, its a mindless minority that give everyone a bad name. Incidently, I'm not sure anyone is giving Americans flak for not being into soccer football. I understand though that the game is fast becoming popular with the young people of America. As the USA are in the world cup, you could get behind them, they aren't a bad team.
I hear that hispanic immigration is increasing enthusiasm for football in the US... but I have heard theya re not really cheering for team USA, but rather for their country of origin... but anyway, yes, there are many who are overly into it. Its just a game. There's nothing that sparks jingoism in Europe more than football (I don't know about Latin American).
Soccer is catching on with more and more Americans with each passing year. And Counciltucky is right, Americans riot, assault police and burn cars over basketball games. But apparently, that's okay and should be above criticism. After all, according to the logic of the neo-con, if Americans do it, it must be okay.
^Unless, of course, liberals, blacks, or Muslims do it. Then it's bad.
I don't think anyone really cares whether the USA is into football or not. And I'm fairly sure that nobody cares whether the USA thinks the rest of the world is too into football (is this true? Or is it just something the ballot maker made up?) But perhaps the USA should take note that teams from all over the world play in the football WORLD cup, unlike their similarly-named baseball series.
I don't think eskimo's care for soccer either
Cranky sums it up just fine. As usual Herzog spins the facts to suit his argument, lol (am I surprised, noooo!). I think he thought his fellow countrymen were as jingoistic as himself and would keep that little fact quiet.
Noone is giving america flak steely its just the dependably screwed version in herzog's head.
I love it, , especially the world cup, but I do hate not having many to discuss it with, for whatever reason Americans aren't into it as much as the rest of the world. I think it was a coach in France, not sure, but he said to his team to relax and forget about Football for awhile, he suggested they go to a deserted island, or The United States. Soccer, football, whatever you care to call it, is the fastest growing sport in America, but the World Cup still doesn't get the attention as the super Bowl.
- better nations sort themselves out THIS way, rather than by doing actual battle!
I can't remember the last time I saw Americans rioting BEFORE or DURING a sporting event. I do remember this happening with soccer games in other countries.
My love for the game comes from my Spanish Family, the rest of the world including myself might be bewildered why Americans don't have the same love for it.
^But to each their own, different people like different things
For once, I would actually agree with Cathexis and accuse you of using a false dichotomy here herzog. You can like football AND not riot, as you are fully aware.
Correction: My fellow Americans, reading my comments over, realized it sounds like I'm not American.
I can understand why in the USA you woldnt see the huge fuss over it. But i put it to you if it was your version of football or saybaseball that was the most played and watched sport in the world then maybe you would think differently ..or think we were alittle stupid if we didnt see the big deal about it. I think its only sucha big deal as it (football/soccer) is the biggest sport in the world..the most played..watched..and celebrated. I mean just look at how many countries play it compared to other sports such as rugby, cricket, American Football, Basketball, Baseball etc..and by that i mean play it i.e televised and that nations most popular sport.
Maybe America should take a little more interest... I would love to see an International soccer match held in Detroit... let the world bring on it's best team w/ the rowdiest patrons... watch the vistiting team loose... taking their aggression to the streets of Detroit after dark... Woo hoo, I'd tune in for that!

Steel: I notice you didn't have a problem stereotyping an entire region for the actions of a 'mindless minority' on ballot 95587. So when you are out to get the english it's ok to stereotype, otherwise it's not. Hmm, hypocrite?
Yeah MO coz detroit is the hardest place on earth. Berlin is nothing to you. your great. See?!? you have the violence mentality. shame you cant actually play the damn game.
"Steel: I notice you didn't have a problem stereotyping an entire region for the actions of a 'mindless minority' on ballot 95587. Yeah MO. You seem unaware that international football matches have been played in far worse cities than Detroit, such as Johannesburg, Rio and Bogota. How will playing in Detroit be any different??
Lol, this is funny. A few days ago all the hardcore european soccer fans on here were ripping each other apart for their behavior at tournaments. Now that an american points this out they all pull together and deny it, and put on a good face for the americans. Ha. It'd be disapointing if it weren't so typical.
herzog- the inconsistency about it now is part of the jingoism I was talking about above. Soccer is the thing that brings out jingoism in all European countries. PS: Boo England! Boooo! ;)
^Bah! ;)
I didnt deny it nor did i get into a hardcore fan debate about it either. WTF are you talking about herzog?
I have to say that Herzog is right. I read those ballots and it was a real battle of wills and words between European users on here. There were a handful of ballots about The World Cup and Soccer in general and lots of European users really showed their nationalistic, flag-waving side. It was kind of funny to see because some of the ones who got the most into it, are the very same ones who accuse Americans of that behavior. Sorry, not trying to cause trouble here, but as we predicted, now all of a sudden, these people see their words and realize how they came across and are trying to deny it or make light of it. Again, if Americans deny or make light of it, same Europeans always act as if we have no right to. Sorry, I call them like I seem them. I'm not saying who, I'm just saying in general.
IMmguessing you all noticed i wasnt in any of these disputes between Europeans..example: english fans slating scotts fans and vice versa...though i do recognise Football/soccer is the most played, televised and watched sport on earth, it is NOT my sport. I LOVE rugby and boxing. To me they are just so much more agressive and comitted..and no one hits the deck pretneding to be hurt all the time..which..lets face it..is pretty sad.
Brit_Airborne - Scotts? They are bad too. They are probably second worse when it comes to rioting over football.
The game sucks, but it's easy to understand, that is why most of the world loves it so much. In order to watch American football, or to understand baseball, you have to be able to figure out rules and concepts and strategy. And don't give me that bullshit about strategy in soccer, it's a bunch of short shorts weirdos who are good at hackysack out on a field booting that idiot ball around for like 2 hours, boring, BORING!! "OH he's broke free, the bloke is making a run for the goal, oh good pass, back to him, oh bloody hell, he missed, again!!"
