The US has always had an "expeditionary force" as its military. That's part of the reason it's so expensive, and so aggressive (unneccessarily at times).
The U.S. could very well bankrupt itself on defense spending. Government spending is out of control. And yes, if you have all those toys, you will want to play with them. I think that is one of the underlying pillars of the neo-con mentality: we should bully the world because we can.
Not 'compelled' really, so much as 'gulled into it by disreputable groups who can profit from it.'
As a percentage of gross national product (GNP), the U.S. spends the LEAST amount on defense.
It was this equation which put the Soviet Union out of business. At the end of the cold war, they were spending almost half of their GNP on defense.
Still, I'd definitely like to see us spend less money on the military and more on domestic programs.
Good ballot!! I didnt know we made more money off of war but figured we did since were always in one. I garuantee we invade Iran or North Korea next.
